Specialist Teacher Art/Music (Grades KG - 8th)

The Specialist Teacher instructs and supervises a diverse group of students by establishing a positive, respectful, and engaging learning environment. The teacher provides meaningful and varied learning opportunities, promotes high standards of performance for all students, and supports the social-emotional development of the whole child. As a member of a collaborative K–8 team, the Specialist Teacher contributes to integrated curriculum design, school culture, family engagement, and the shared responsibility of maintaining a joyful, safe, and academically rigorous learning environment.

Instruction & Curriculum

• Plan and deliver high-quality instruction aligned to Oregon State Standards
• Establish clear instructional objectives and create long- and short-range plans that meet students' developmental needs and interests
• Develop organized, engaging, and sequential lessons
• Incorporate integrated and thematic learning experiences consistent with Sherwood Charter School's instructional model
• Assess and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including students with IEPs, 504 Plans, and other specialized supports
• Assure that every student has multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency
• Use formative and summative assessments to monitor progress and guide instruction
• Provide timely and constructive feedback to students
• Responsible for 1-2 elective classes each trimester, aligned to core subject

School Culture & Family Engagement

• Model and explicitly teach honor, empathy, accountability, respect and teamwork
• Establish and maintain a positive classroom climate
• Develop reasonable classroom expectations and implement proactive classroom management strategies
• Reinforce school wide behavior systems and character development initiatives
• Actively participate in and support special events as outlined in the staff handbook, which may take place outside of normal school hours throughout the school year including subject showcases.
• Maintain open, consistent communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and growth

School wide Theme, Houses Program & Social-Emotional Learning

Sherwood Charter School's middle school operates within a year-long thematic framework through the Houses Program. The Houses program and social-emotional instruction are essential components of the middle school experience and are a shared responsibility among middle school faculty. The annual theme (e.g., The Power of One) guides interdisciplinary learning, service projects, exhibitions, debates, leadership development, and social-emotional growth.

• Active contribution to the Houses Program throughout the year
• Integrate the annual theme into instruction and field trips when appropriate
• Collaborate and facilitate House-related lessons and social-emotional learning activities
• Contribute to trimester focus areas that align with the annual theme
• Support student leadership, collaboration, and positive peer culture
• Facilitate discussions and activities that build character, empathy, accountability, and teamwork
• Participate in showcases, exhibitions, and service learning projects

Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively as part of a small, cohesive K–8 team to support students' academic and social-emotional growth
• Participate in Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and collaborative problem-solving processes
• Participate in development and implementation of individual student plans (IEP, 504, behavior support plans)
• Assume shared supervision responsibilities (playground, lunchroom, arrival/dismissal, etc.)
• Support and direct the classroom work of Instructional Aides and volunteers
• Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and professional development
• Reflect upon instructional practice and pursue ongoing professional growth
• Utilize technology to enhance instruction and communication
• Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential student records
• Employ sound judgment in daily interactions and emergency situations
• Adapt to the evolving needs of a charter school environment
