The purpose of this position is to facilitate Special Education student success in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living through implementation of district-approved curriculum, documentation of teaching and student progress, and maintenance of Individualized Education Plans (IEP). The teacher is responsible for creating a safe and optimal learning environment, providing instructional support, and ensuring compliance with IDEA and state regulations.

• Adapts lessons for the purpose of implementing the IEP goals and meeting the special needs of students.
• Evaluates students’ abilities and performance for the purpose of establishing eligibility under the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, setting educational goals, determining placement, and evaluating student progress.
• Collaborates with school personnel, agencies, and community agencies to develop and modify the program to maximize student outcomes.
• Develops and maintains Individualized Education Plans (IEP) for each student served to ensure compliance with IDEA and state regulations.
• Directs instructional assistants, volunteers, and/or student aides to provide an effective program and address individual student needs.
• Instills instruction to students with individualized special needs to develop appropriate academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
• Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Maintains consistent and predictable attendance to meet district requirements.
• Convenes, chairs, and documents the activity of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), IEP team, and Placement Team to provide a free, appropriate public education and maintain compliance with IDEA and state regulations.
• Creates and maintains special education files in accordance with district direction for compliance.
• Prepares teaching materials and reports (grades, attendance, anecdotal records) to implement lesson plans and document teacher and student progress.
• Reports incidents (fights, suspected abuse, substance abuse) to maintain student safety and a positive learning environment.

• May administer medication, first aid, personal hygiene, and/or health care requirements as required.
• Assists other personnel as required to support completion of their work activities.
• Participates in various meetings (parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings) to receive and provide information and meet credential requirements.
• Updates job knowledge by participating in in services and staff development offerings.

• Experience working with elementary-age students with special needs in a MTSS/special education setting.
