The Chiller Design Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and optimization of industrial and commercial chiller systems, including air cooled, water cooled, and process cooling configurations. This role focuses on thermodynamic modeling, component selection, system integration, testing, and documentation to deliver high performance, reliable, and cost effective products.
Responsibilities Design & Development- Lead the design of chiller systems, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, heat exchangers, fans, pumps, refrigerant circuits, and controls.
- Develop and validate system thermodynamic models to predict capacity, efficiency, and operating envelope.
- Size and select mechanical components (compressors, valves, coils, expansion devices) based on performance requirements and standards.
- Create and maintain P&IDs, schematics, CAD models, and BOMs for production.
- Plan and execute lab performance tests and reliability tests for prototypes and new product introductions.
- Analyze test data, diagnose issues, and propose corrective actions.
- Support field testing, customer FAT/SAT, and performance verification.
- Ensure product designs comply with applicable standards (AHRI, ASHRAE, UL/ETL, CE, ISO).
- Support refrigerant safety assessments (ASHRAE 15 & 34, A2L/A1 considerations).
- Work with manufacturing on design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and cost optimization.
- Partner with supply chain to qualify suppliers and components.
- Provide engineering support to sales, service, and technical support teams.
- Prepare and maintain engineering documentation including calculations, test reports, control narratives, risk assessments, and design change records (ECR/ECO).
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in chiller design, refrigeration systems, HVAC, or thermal system engineering.
- Understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and vapor compression cycles.
- CAD proficiency (Solid Works, AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar).
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Strong mechanical and thermal system design capability.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and complex system schematics.
- Cross functional communication and collaboration skills.
- Strong documentation and organizational abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Experience with engineering tools such as EES, MATLAB, or similar modeling tools.
- Knowledge of industry codes and standards: AHRI, ASHRAE, UL/ETL, ISO.
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Thermal Sciences.
- Experience with low GWP refrigerants (A2L).
- Familiarity with controls systems and BMS integration (BACnet/Modbus).
