Location: Harrisburg

Knife River is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to support infrastructure and construction materials projects across the U.S. In this role, you will lead civil and structural design for roads, highways, and commercial developments using aggregates, ready-mix concrete, and asphalt. You will prepare and review drawings, calculations, and specifications, ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards. Working closely with project managers and field teams, you'll develop constructible, cost-effective solutions, support estimating and bid efforts, conduct site visits, and mentor junior staff in a safety-focused, team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering design for infrastructure and construction materials projects (roads, highways, commercial sites).
  • Prepare and review plans, specifications, and calculations using CAD and engineering software.
  • Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and field crews to develop constructible, cost-effective solutions.
  • Ensure designs meet safety, quality, code, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support project bidding, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates.
  • Perform site visits to assess conditions, troubleshoot issues, and verify design implementation.
  • Review submittals, RFIs, and change orders for technical accuracy.
  • Maintain documentation and drawings in accordance with company standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and drafters, sharing best practices and technical guidance.
  • Champion Knife River's safety-first and integrity-driven culture in all project activities.
