Position Summary The phlebotomist performs venipuncture techniques to obtain quality blood samples from patients and prepares those specimens for medical testing. The phlebotomist has direct contact with patients and must create an atmosphere of trust and confidence while explaining procedures and drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe and accurate manner. Phlebotomists prepare blood samples following strict safety precautions. A phlebotomist must work well under pressure and be sensitive to confidentiality and accuracy in recording a patient’s blood history.

Functions And Responsibilities
  • Greet and welcome patients using AIDET methodologies, verify patient identification, verify tests ordered by the physician and check specimen requirements before performing phlebotomy procedure.
  • Collect and prepare samples for analysis accurately and skillfully; evaluate suitability of the specimens, appropriately accept or reject them according to laboratory policy.
  • Perform venipuncture or capillary collection of blood specimens using proper techniques, paying attention to the proper order of tube collection as well as labeling tubes in the patient’s presence.
  • Assist in the processing of specimens; distribute paperwork and specimens to appropriate departments or according to the reference lab test directory for send-outs.
  • Use the lab computer system: order entry for patient testing, patient inquiries for finding specific patient results, adding tests on previously collected samples.
  • Restock and track inventory in the phlebotomy room and mobile blood drawing trays.
  • Collect samples for pre-employment, DOT and random urine samples for drug testing while maintaining chain of custody as required by specific order set.
  • Collect non-DOT and DOT breath alcohol samples testing while maintaining chain of custody as required by specific order set.
  • Collect Covid-19 specimens in-house and at the outdoor designated Covid-19 collection area.
  • Assist nursing staff with collections of ER, swing bed, and inpatients when necessary.

  • Ability to prioritize, highly organized.
Education Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of approved Phlebotomy Technician Program or three months on the job phlebotomy training or experience in a clinical setting.
Preferred Education
  • 1 year of phlebotomy related experience.
  • Successful completion of a nationally accredited phlebotomy or medical assistant training program.
  • Successful completion of an internship while actively enrolled in and progressing through a nationally accredited phlebotomy or medical assistant training program.
  • Knowledge of specimen handling and collection requirements, general laboratory workflow, and basic medical terminology.

Preferred Certifications
  • Certification (Certified Phlebotomy Technician (PBT), etc.) from a state or government agency or nationally recognized organization, e.g., American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA).
