Job Summary
The Senior Network Engineer is a hands-on technical expert responsible for the design, operation, and continuous reliability of the PEAK Internet subscriber network. This role drives the day-to-day engineering, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of core, distribution, and access network infrastructure to ensure high availability, performance, and scalability. The Senior Network Engineer owns network planning, troubleshooting, and optimization efforts, proactively identifying and resolving issues, implementing improvements, and ensuring best practices are followed across the network.
This position provides technical leadership by setting standards, mentoring peers, and coordinating work with other team members as needed. This is an on-site, full-time, 40-hour-per-week position. The regular schedule is Monday through Thursday, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., working out of both the Lebanon and Philomath offices. Functions
- Operate, monitor, and maintain the ISP network to meet uptime, performance, and service-level objectives for residential and business customers.
- Serve as the escalation point for advanced network problems, performing root-cause analysis and restoring service across core, distribution, access, and customer-facing infrastructure.
- Plan, design, and deploy scalable, resilient network solutions supporting current services and future growth, including routing, switching, transport, and access technologies.
- Configure, maintain, and optimize routing protocols and traffic flows to ensure efficient, secure, and predictable network behavior.
- Proactively analyze performance metrics, utilization trends, and fault data to identify risks, perform capacity planning, and recommend upgrades before service degradation occurs.
- Implement and maintain security controls, routing policies, and best practices to protect the network from outages, misconfigurations, and external threats.
- Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain network equipment, software, and facilities, including routers, switches, transport systems, and supporting services.
- Create and maintain network diagrams, configurations, procedures, and standards to ensure consistency, operational efficiency, and knowledge transfer.
- Offer technical guidance to other engineers and technicians, review designs and configurations, and help elevate overall network engineering capability.
- Collaborate with internal teams and vendors on service launches, upgrades, and special projects, ensuring network requirements and timelines are met.
Required Education And Experience
- Minimum high school diploma or GED and vocational or technical training in telecommunications systems, computer networks, or related field; or any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- 5+ years experience in telecommunications industry
- Valid driver’s license. Other driving-related requirements may apply depending on the nature and scope of responsibilities associated with driving on behalf of PEAK.
- Deep understanding of ISP network architectures, including core, distribution, access, and peering environments supporting residential and business services.
- Proven ability to configure, operate, and troubleshoot routing and switching technologies, including BGP, OSPF, VLANs, VRFs, SD-WAN, and high-availability designs.
- Hands on experience with common service provider platforms such as Juniper, Cisco, Arista, Calix, Ciena, etc.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex, multi-layer network issues under pressure, including intermittent, large-scale, or customer-impacting outages.
- Strong ability to install, configure, and maintain carrier-grade network equipment, transport systems, and supporting services in live production environments.
- Knowledge of traffic flow analysis, QoS, and routing policy design to optimize performance, manage congestion, and ensure consistent service delivery.
- Understanding of ISP-relevant security controls, including access controls, routing security, DDoS mitigation concepts, and configuration hardening.
- Ability to use network monitoring systems, logging, and automation tools to improve visibility, reduce manual effort, and increase operational reliability.
- Ability to produce clear network diagrams, standards, and procedures, and to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to prioritize work, make sound technical decisions, and maintain stability and consistency in a 24/7 operational environment.
