Buyer II
The Buyer II is a process-oriented supply chain professional responsible for ensuring material availability to support the production schedule. This role procures materials for both standard production assemblies and first-time automation system builds, balancing cost, quality, and availability. The Buyer II manages multiple projects simultaneously, thrives in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities, and collaborates closely with internal stakeholders and suppliers to maintain a reliable and cost-effective supply chain.
Responsibilities
- Initiate purchase orders for parts and services based on demand generated through customer sales orders and manage any necessary revisions.
- Provide regular material status reports for multiple projects, highlighting changes in materials, pricing, lead times, and other critical supply chain information to all stakeholders.
- Monitor, report, and update the status of open purchase orders to ensure on-time delivery of all materials, including timely resolution, communication, and mitigation of potential material availability or delivery issues.
- Coordinate material flows through product and bill of materials (BOM) changes, obsolescence, and the introduction of new suppliers or materials driven by new product development.
- Collaborate with internal customers and deliver a high level of customer service, including working with the buyer/planner to recommend solutions, resources, and alternative supply options.
- Secure and analyze supplier quotations, negotiate prices and terms, and recommend suppliers based on cost, quality, and schedule/availability.
- Provide backup support for other supply chain functions, including shipping, receiving, and material handling, as needed.
- Identify, evaluate, and set up new vendors prior to conducting business, including establishing terms and ensuring appropriate mutual non-disclosure agreements and company documentation are in place.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with a network of vendors to support reliable supply and favorable terms.
- Establish and maintain an approved vendor list in collaboration with quality and engineering departments.
- Support the engineered solutions group by compiling costed BOMs of low to mid-level complexity to support cost estimates for new business opportunities.
- Recognize, recommend, and support implementation of process improvement opportunities within purchasing and broader supply chain processes.
Essential Skills
- 2–4 years of experience in a purchasing or supply chain role.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior experience using an ERP system's purchasing functions; experience with SAP is preferred.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite, including advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
- Demonstrated experience in purchasing, procurement, and purchase order management.
- Knowledge of supply chain processes within a manufacturing environment.
- Strong negotiation skills for pricing and terms with suppliers.
- Strong sense of urgency and attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Strong follow-up skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to self-direct and take constructive action in ambiguous situations.
- Ability to move and transport material up to 30 lbs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience in a purchasing or supply chain role is preferred.
- Experience working with SAP or similar ERP systems in a manufacturing industry environment.
- Ability to compile and analyze costed bills of materials for new product or engineered solutions.
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective vendor relationships.
- Experience supporting cross-functional teams, including quality, engineering, and production.
- Continuous improvement mindset with the ability to identify and suggest process enhancements.
