Overview

General Purpose
The primary responsibility of your job position is to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility during your tour of duty. Such supervision must be in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern the facility and may be required by the Director of Nursing (DON) and/or Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) when applicable, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

  • Administrative Functions
  • Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines for the long-term care facility.
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures for nursing service operations.
  • Ensure reference material at the nurses’ stations is current; recommend materials to assist the nursing service department in meeting residents’ needs.
  • Keep the Nursing Service Procedures Manual current and reflect daily nursing procedures.
  • Ensure nursing service personnel comply with the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
  • Provide written and oral reports/recommendations to the Director concerning the operation of the nursing service department.
  • Periodically review policies, procedure manuals, and job descriptions; recommend revisions to the Director.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
  • Ensure compliance of nursing service personnel with their job descriptions.
  • Participate in the facility’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
  • Support facility surveys conducted by authorized government agencies.
  • Review and update residents’ discharge plans as required; assist in planning the nursing services portion of discharge plans.
  • Meet with nursing staff and support personnel to plan department services, programs, and activities.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.
  • Complete accident/incident reports as necessary.
  • Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies as required.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, and charting as necessary.
  • Protect resident information and report suspected violations of disclosure; report unauthorized attempts to access the facility’s information system.
  • Committee Functions
  • Attend facility committee meetings (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment) as required.
  • Prepare written/oral reports of nursing service programs and activities for committees.
  • Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee as requested.
  • Participate in developing the Care Plan Committee agendas.
  • Review discharge plans and make them available to the Care Plan Committee as required.
  • Implement committee recommendations as instructed by the Director.
  • Personnel Functions
  • Ensure adequate staffing of licensed practical and/or registered nurses for each tour of duty to maintain quality care.
  • Ensure adequate certified nursing assistants for daily care needs.
  • Develop work assignments and oversee task execution.
  • Delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurses for assigned duties.
  • Ensure nursing assistants are enrolled in or have graduated from an approved training program; supervise nurse aide trainees.
  • Monitor daily rounds to ensure adherence to nursing standards and report findings to the Director.
  • Monitor absenteeism and address staffing gaps with the Director.
  • Enforce policies and dress codes; review complaints and grievances within the department.
  • Foster good inter-department relations to support resident care.
  • Maintain a positive, warm, and calm environment; lead regular shift meetings to address problems.
