JOB SUMMARYThe Registered Nurse provides professional nursing services to support student health, safety, access to education, and participation in school programs. Assigned to a school or group of schools, this position delivers services in accordance with Oregon Nurse Practice Act, Oregon Department of Education guidance, IDEA, Section 504, and evidence-based school nursing standards.
The primary purpose of this position is to promote and protect student health so that students are able to safely attend school, access instruction, and participate fully in educational activities. The Registered Nurse addresses health conditions that may affect learning, attendance, or safety through assessment, care coordination, health planning, medication management, and health education.
This role operates within a student-centered, team-based service model, collaborating closely with families, educators, administrators, special education teams, and community health providers. Services emphasize prevention, early intervention, and capacity-building of school staff through training, consultation, and development of health-related procedures and plans.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESEssential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Assess student health needs and provide professional nursing care to support safe participation in school and school-sponsored activities.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Health Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and care protocols based on medical documentation and student needs.
- Participate as a member of IEP, IFSP, and Section 504 teams, providing health-related input, recommendations, and documentation.
- Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, district policy, and state regulations.
- Provide consultation and training to school staff regarding health conditions, medication administration, emergency procedures, infection control, and student safety.
- Monitor and respond to acute illness, injury, and medical emergencies, providing first aid, nursing interventions, and emergency response coordination.
- Coordinate care with families, healthcare providers, public health agencies, and community resources to support continuity of care.
- Conduct health-related screenings, surveillance, and monitoring as required by law, district policy, or student health plans.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential health records, documentation, and reports in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA (as applicable), and district requirements.
- Support school wide health initiatives related to attendance, communicable disease prevention, chronic condition management, and student wellness.
- Maintain professional competence through continuing education, adherence to ethical standards, and alignment with current school nursing best practices.
- Demonstrates strong professional conduct and confidentiality.
- Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to the supervisor.
