Clinical Unit Leader – St. Charles Hospital

Job Summary

The Lead RN/Charge Nurse is responsible for coordinating patient care on a designated unit. In collaboration with the Clinical Manager, this role uses the nursing process and clinical knowledge to coordinate members of the health care team to develop and sustain an environment that promotes excellence in clinical practice and customer satisfaction, while striving for optimal efficiency and productivity of all resources.

Functions
  • Adjust the schedule and patient assignments to accommodate changes in acuity, patient population, resources and care design.
  • Provide staff guidance and clinical support; oversee unit responsibility in the absence of the unit leader.
  • Maintain current knowledge of environmental safety standards and infection control; utilize appropriate supplies and equipment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families regarding nursing interventions and plan of care.
  • Round on patients to evaluate safety, quality and patient experience.
  • Serve as a resource to staff, patients and family members to ensure effective communication.
  • Functions as a clinical resource and role model for staff; may serve as a preceptor.
  • Actively participate in interprofessional collaborative practice to ensure care coordination, continuity of care and optimal patient experience.
  • Communicate effectively and follow through with other departments as necessary to resolve operational problems.
  • Participate in ongoing quality monitoring and performance improvement through monitoring activities and evaluation of unit-based results; provide suggestions for studies.
  • Facilitate appropriate patient placement and safe, efficient admission, transfer and discharge processes.
  • Provide feedback and mentoring to nursing and support staff.
  • Foster teamwork, mutual respect, open communication and conflict resolution; manage conflict in a timely, direct and positive manner.
  • Support the mission and vision of the organization and adhere to policies.
  • Practice and deliver care in accordance with the core concepts of the Nursing Professional Practice Model.
Education
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred)
Required Licensing & Certifications
  • Current RN license in the state they are working or covered by compact (required)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) (preferred upon hire; must obtain prior to entering patient care setting)
  • Certifications required based on the unit(s) overseen and their specific requirements:
  • PALS (preferred)
  • ACLS (preferred)
  • NRP (preferred)
  • TNCC (preferred)
  • ENPC (preferred)
  • National Board Certification (preferred)
  • Nurse Executive Certification or designated specialty certification (preferred)
Experience
  • 2 years nursing experience with 1 year minimum clinical experience in the acuity level of the desired area (preferred)
