Overview

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is responsible for caring for state parklands and serving visitors through its properties and programs. As a permanent, full‑time Park Ranger 1 you will protect and care for the landscapes, facilities, and resources within the Champoeg Management Unit.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain park grounds, operate and repair facilities and equipment, and safeguard natural and cultural resources.
  • Apply carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting, landscaping, and general maintenance skills.
  • Engage in specialized program areas such as resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility and infrastructure operation, and park rule enforcement.
  • Serve visitors with exceptional customer service, including rule enforcement and interpretation programs.
  • Participate in safety meetings, identify and address safety hazards, and resolve customer complaints.
  • Guide seasonal employees, volunteers, and others in completing assigned tasks.
Qualifications
  • Two years of visitor services experience (rule enforcement, interpretation, special events, etc.) and/or maintenance experience (construction trades, landscaping).
  • OR an associate’s degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies, plus 6 months of visitor services experience and/or maintenance experience.
Special Requirements
  • Successful completion of a criminal record and driving record check that meets OPRD criteria.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or obtain one after appointment).
  • Enforcement Officer status desired (if applicable).
Desired Attributes
  • Proficient safe use of tools, materials, and equipment related to landscape, building, facility, and utility system maintenance.
  • Computer software proficiency for data entry, reservation, and financial transaction processing.
  • Exceptional customer service experience in a park or related recreational setting.
  • Collaborative teamwork with coworkers, volunteers, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to give direction to seasonal employees, volunteers, and adults in correctional custody.
  • Conflict resolution skills related to overnight camping and rule interpretation.
  • Proactive safety hazard identification and meeting participation.
