The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is responsible for caring for state parklands and serving visitors through its properties and programs. As a permanent, full‑time Park Ranger 1 you will protect and care for the landscapes, facilities, and resources within the Champoeg Management Unit.
Responsibilities- Maintain park grounds, operate and repair facilities and equipment, and safeguard natural and cultural resources.
- Apply carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting, landscaping, and general maintenance skills.
- Engage in specialized program areas such as resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility and infrastructure operation, and park rule enforcement.
- Serve visitors with exceptional customer service, including rule enforcement and interpretation programs.
- Participate in safety meetings, identify and address safety hazards, and resolve customer complaints.
- Guide seasonal employees, volunteers, and others in completing assigned tasks.
- Two years of visitor services experience (rule enforcement, interpretation, special events, etc.) and/or maintenance experience (construction trades, landscaping).
- OR an associate’s degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies, plus 6 months of visitor services experience and/or maintenance experience.
- Successful completion of a criminal record and driving record check that meets OPRD criteria.
- Valid driver’s license.
- First Aid/CPR certification (or obtain one after appointment).
- Enforcement Officer status desired (if applicable).
- Proficient safe use of tools, materials, and equipment related to landscape, building, facility, and utility system maintenance.
- Computer software proficiency for data entry, reservation, and financial transaction processing.
- Exceptional customer service experience in a park or related recreational setting.
- Collaborative teamwork with coworkers, volunteers, and stakeholders.
- Ability to give direction to seasonal employees, volunteers, and adults in correctional custody.
- Conflict resolution skills related to overnight camping and rule interpretation.
- Proactive safety hazard identification and meeting participation.
