Position: Seasonal Park Ranger Assistant (Detroit Lake)
Location: Detroit

Job Overview

Detroit Lake State Recreation Area, near Salem, Oregon. Seasonal Park Ranger Assistant (Detroit Lake). This recruitment will be used to fill multiple seasonal positions and may close at any time once vacancies are filled.

As a seasonal, full‑time Park Ranger Assistant, you will assist year‑round State Park staff in the protection, maintenance, operation and repair of state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment, and systems.

Tasks may include janitorial work, landscape maintenance, interpretation or visitor services, and, depending on assignment, basic building trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and landscape maintenance.

Park Ranger Assistants may also guide volunteers, seasonal and/or temporary employees on task‑specific assignments.

Seasonal work generally runs April through September, but durations may vary by park needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Six (6) months of experience (paid or unpaid) performing public contact or customer service duties (e.g., teacher, customer service representative, salesperson, receptionist, etc.) and/or maintenance experience (construction trades, landscaping, custodial, etc.)
  • OR six (6) months of college in any discipline (24 quarter hours/16 semester hours)
Special Requirements
  • Criminal record and driving record check that meets OPRD Criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment, while also maintaining a valid driver’s license
Desired Attributes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience communicating well with others
  • Ability to use a computer to record and verify information, perform basic data entry, and navigate reservation systems
  • Experience providing customers with information about facility rules and asking them to comply with those rules
  • Experience handling cash, making change and preparing simple cash reconciliation reports
  • Skill in the safe use of tools, material and motorized equipment associated with landscape and building maintenance and performing related duties
  • Experience performing custodial duties, including cleaning public restroom facilities
  • Skill in promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment
