Relief (Locum) Veterinarian

Pay range: $130-150/hour.

Job Purpose

The primary purpose and function of the Relief Veterinarian is to provide preventative care, diagnose and treat diseases and injuries of pets.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure safety of pets, clients and associates using safe restraining techniques, protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile, organized treatment areas, exam rooms, and labs.
  • Obtain client history and maintain complete medical records.
  • Educate clients about preventative care, pet health needs, diagnoses or treatments, hospital services and related information.
  • Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service, including prescribing and administering preventative care and diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of pets.
  • Effectively communicate diagnosis and treatment plan to the veterinary medical team and client.
  • Ensure local, state and federal laws are followed, including proper maintenance of the controlled substance inventory log.
  • Understand and follow state guidelines for veterinary assistants and licensed veterinary technicians.
  • Complete other assigned duties.

  • Excellent communication skills: fluently read, write, and speak English with proper grammar, spelling, and vocabulary; strong written and verbal communication.

  • Surgical skills: proven ability to perform all basic surgeries, use standard medical instruments and equipment.

  • Compassionate commitment to pet care: advocate for pet health, present recommendations and fees persuasively.
  • Mathematical ability: add, subtract, multiply, divide, compute rates, ratios, percentages, and convert units.
  • Computer skills: confident with computer and specialized software (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, etc.).
  • Management ability: enforce policies, maintain productivity, encourage teamwork, coach for performance.

Special Working Conditions
  • Work may require more than 40 hours a week, including weekends and evenings.
  • Requirements for reasoning, remembering, mathematics, and language proficiency.
  • Noise level moderate high.
  • Must stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb; manipulate up to 50 lbs.
  • Good hand‑eye coordination, finger dexterity, visual acuity; vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth.
  • Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch; occasional anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, medication/controlled substances.
  • Minimal travel for vendor visits and education.
Experience, Education and Training
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent.
  • License in good standing with applicable state veterinary board.
  • License with Drug Enforcement Agency required.
  • Proven ability to perform basic surgeries with standard instruments.
