Job Summary
Bonneville Hatchery Technician (Fish and Wildlife Technician) – a full‑time seasonal position (September 12026–May 312027) at the Bonneville Hatchery in Cascade Locks, Oregon. The role supports the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) in protecting and enhancing Oregon’s fish and wildlife habitats.
Responsibilities- Care for fish, handle eggs and fry, and maintain grounds and equipment. Tasks include pond care, feeding, grading and collecting eggs, shocking, picking, enumerating, and treating fish diseases. Record feeding, water quality, mortalities, liberations, and maintain gas, oil, and mileage logs.
- Weigh, count, and load fish and eggs for transfer and liberation.
- Maintain, construct, and perform minor repairs to ponds, walkways, fish feeders, egg trays, screens, hatchery buildings, residences, pumps, lawn mowers, power tools, roads, trails, and landscapes (lawns, shrubs, trees).
- Meet the public, maintain public relations, answer questions, and conduct hatchery tours.
- Option1:
Eighteen (18) months of fish culture experience, or six (6) months of fisheries, fish screens, wildlife, or related habitat work experience that counts toward the experience requirement. - Option2:
An associate degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture, or Aquarium Science. A higher degree in Fisheries Science or a closely‑related field with at least 45 quarter hours (30 semester hours) of biological or ecological coursework may substitute for the associate degree.
- Fish culture experience in a hatchery setting.
- Experience working with eggs and fry.
- Experience handling adult fish.
- Knowledge of water systems and maintenance.
- Ability to operate electronic or mechanical equipment.
- Strong data collection and record‑keeping skills.
- Ability to write technical or summary reports.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience interacting with the public.
- Competitive salary range: 3,798–5,193 per month.
