Job Summary:

To complete projects planned under the Oregon Department of Forestry, Urban Community Forest grant agreement. Projects are designed to maintain and improve forest health and therefore support cultural, environmental and economic services for the Tribal Membership. Incumbent provides leadership for and works with a wildfire crew, performing a variety of technical and skilled tasks in wildfire protection, wildfire dispatch, fuel management, prescribed burning, habitat restoration, reforestation, and site preparation.

This is a temporary full-time position that will terminate when grant funds are expended. Grant funding is budgeted to sustain through calendar year 2028.

Essential Functions:

• Wildfire patrols and protection of all tribally managed forest lands is the primary function of this position.
• Assists the United States Wildfire Service (USWFS) with off reservation dispatch and assists with other disaster response as needed.
• Performs a variety of technical and skilled tasks under a fire and forest management plan and projects described within the Oregon Department of Forestry, Urban Community Forest Grant.
• Performs field work necessary for prescribed fire management, including maintaining fire equipment, slashing, fire trailing, lighting, holding and mop-up.
• Participates in wildland fire activities, including protecting Reservation, and adjoining State, public and private lands.
• Ensures that crew members follow safety practices.
• Assists in training of crew to perform required job duties.
• Performs maintenance on chain saws and tools to assure proper working conditions.
• Operates a variety of equipment such as a forklift, four-wheeler, grass trimmer, brush cutters, and tractor.
• Uses power saws and other equipment to perform manual release and pre-commercial thinning of trees to enhance growth.
• Plants trees and performs seedling protection such as tubing, netting and budcapping.
• Prunes trees using pull saws.
• Builds fire trail and recreational and hiking trails, providing regular maintenance as needed.
• Assists other departments within the Natural Resources Division such as Timber, Fish and Wildlife, and Recreation.
• Assists in set up of annual Pow Wow, , and Veterans Pow Wow.
• Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

• Requires a high school diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience.
• OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Driving Requirements:

• Employees may be required to drive for work-related purposes and must maintain a valid Oregon Driver’s License (ODL), meet company vehicle insurance requirements, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.
• Ability to obtain a CDL license preferred.

Qualifications, Registrations, and

Certifications:

• National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Firefighter Type-1 (FFT1) certification is required.
• Preferred NWCG Incident Commander Type-5 (ICT5) certification or ability to obtain immediately upon hire.
• Ability to be trained as a Basic Faller (FAL3) and be certified within three (3) months upon hire.
• Preferred NWCG Engine Boss (ENGB) certification or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
• Preferred Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and NWCG single resource certifications such as Engine Boss (ENGB), Crew Boss (CRWB), Firing boss (FIRB), Heavy Equipment Boss (HEQB) and Falling Boss (FALB).
• Must be CPR/First Aid certified or ability to obtain upon hire.
• Must pass the National Wildfire Coordinating Group annual arduous national fitness test and may be subject to medical screening.
• Must pass the Department of Interior, Medical Standards certification program and may be subject to medical examination.
• Must have the ability to work at times with minimal supervision.
• Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Must be willing to accept off forest dispatch assignments year-round.
• Must be flexible to work long and odd hours, evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.
