Position: Fish Biologist.
Location: Rufus

Responsibilities

  • Review work reports and research proposals submitted by state and federal fishery agencies and Indian tribes regarding fish facility operation, fish protective programs, and effects of dam operations on fish resources.
  • Monitor and make direct observations of anadromous fish passage conditions as well as general fish conditions.
  • Stay abreast of the latest developments and techniques in fish conservation and management through review of technical bulletins, research reports, and attendance at professional society and Corps resource management meetings, seminars, and schools.
  • Prepare a variety of reports, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and memorandums for fish-related activities.
Conditions of Employment
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Heavy lifting of at least 50 pounds is required.
  • Completion of a pre‑employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter is required.
  • A valid state driver's license must be held at the time of appointment.
Qualifications

Basic Requirement for Fish Biologist:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in biology, zoology, or biological oceanography that includes at least 30 semester hours in biological and aquatic science and 15 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences. Required coursework must include:
    • At least 15 semester hours of preparatory training in zoology beyond introductory biology or zoology (e.g., invertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, histology, physiology, embryology, advanced vertebrate zoology, genetics, entomology, parasitology).
    • At least 6 semester hours of training applicable to fishery biology (e.g., fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, oceanography, algology, planktonology, marine or freshwater ecology, invertebrate ecology, principles of fishery population dynamics).
    • At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of chemistry, physics, mathematics, or statistics.

Specialized Experience or

Education:

  • One year of specialized experience that includes:
    1) Applying knowledge of fishery issues related to Indian treaties, commercial and sport fisheries, Canadian treaty, fish passage, and/or water budget;
    2) Reviewing biological implications of proposed actions; and
    3) Overseeing fish-related operations and maintenance activities.
  • OR a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in an appropriate field.
  • OR a combination of education and experience that meets at least 100% of the computed percentage of requirements as described in the original posting.
