Work is performed to provide care and custody of adult prisoners and to maintain order and discipline among the prisoners of the Malheur County Jail. Employees in this classification are responsible for the operation of the jail on a 24-hour, 7 day a week basis, and the direct and indirect supervision of the inmates. Work is performed under the general supervision from a Senior Corrections Officer or Corrections Sergeant.
Supervision is not normally a function of this class. Employees occupying position of this class may be assigned to train other employees.
Essential functions include controlling access to jail facilities, maintaining key and equipment control, operating and monitoring surveillance and electronic security equipment, conducting security and inmate welfare checks, supervising inmate's movement, counseling inmates regarding their behavior in jail, supervising inmate program activities, maintaining discipline, reviewing and recommending classification and housing of inmates, conducting inmate status checks, monitoring inmates to ensure that health standards are maintained, maintaining activity schedules, supervising meal services to ensure all inmates receive all scheduled meals, scheduling inmates for medical, dental and mental health care, booking new inmates, confirming the arresting agency, overseeing compliance with entry security procedures, conducting frisk/ and or strip search of inmates and removing personal property, searching and inventorying personal property, confiscating illegal personal property, removing restraints and completing fingerprinting and photographing, assigning initial custody classification, and release status, assigning inmates to appropriate housing area, issuing clothing and bedding, establishing inmates release validity, initiating inmate movement to the appropriate area, verifying the inmate identity and returning personal clothing and property, collecting county property, ensuring the accurate completion of the release agreement, responding to jail emergencies including medical, minor or major inmate disturbances, failure of facility physical plant systems, escapes and fires and natural disasters, reading and complying with department policies and procedures, writing reports, enforcing inmate rules, participating in training and collateral duty assignments, conducting security and perimeter checks, transporting and supervising inmates outside of the jail, conducting emergency drills, using mechanical restraints and/ or physical force as necessary, dispensing prescribed medication, supervising inmates during recreation activities, on work projects, trusties working in the county, and visitation, providing laundry exchange and commissary access, greeting the public in person and by telephone, answering questions and informing the public about inmate welfare, jail procedures, visitation, and court procedures, supervising inmate on work projects within the jail and external community services and public works projects, monitoring inmate in a variety of minimum custody settings, serving subpoenas to inmates, warrants of arrest, appearing in court as a witness, performing courthouse security as assigned, and performing related duties as assigned.
Qualifications include being twenty-one years of age, having a high school diploma or G.E.D certificate, holding a valid Oregon State driver's license, completing Malheur County Sheriff's Office background investigation, passing a medical exam and psychological evaluation prior to appointment, being free of conviction of a crime other than a minor traffic violation, being certifiable as a corrections deputy by the Oregon Department of Public Standards and Training, possessing basic first aid and CPR, and maintaining a safe and acceptable driving record per County policy throughout the course of employment.
