JOB SUMMARY
The Public Safety Coordinator is an unarmed, non-uniformed position that assists the Director and Manager of Public Safety with administrative duties. The role involves public safety initiatives and functions such as security technology—including access control, surveillance, investigations, panic buttons, alarms, visitor management, and weapons detection—collaborating with Public Safety leaders across shifts to ensure training adherence to St. Tammany Health System (STHS) policies, assisting with security statistics, reports, equipment ordering, inventory maintenance, parking and transportation contracts, and coordinating security services for all STHS off‑site locations.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Serve as the primary instructor for de‑escalation and taser training courses.
- Collaborate with external training vendors to keep Public Safety colleagues updated on firearm certifications and qualifications.
- Develop a comprehensive on‑the‑job training curriculum approved by the Manager and Director of Public Safety.
- Work with Shift Supervisors and Senior Public Safety Officers to ensure consistent on‑the‑job training across all shifts.
- Assist with Public Safety supervisory duties as needed and respond to all emergency situations, alerting local authorities when required.
- Enforce and follow all Security and STHS policies and procedures, and complete any additional duties assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required;
Associate’s degree in criminal justice or information technology preferred. - Must read, write, and follow written or oral instructions.
- 5+ years of security‑related experience required; security technology experience preferred.
- 2+ years of security‑related supervisory experience preferred.
- Must have no felony convictions.
- Certified Healthcare Security Officer Certification from the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety preferred; must obtain within the first 90 days of employment and advance certification within the first year.
- Must own a privately owned cellular phone for emergencies and on‑call events.
- Must be eligible and willing to work 8‑hour shifts, Monday‑Friday day and/or night, including weekends as needed.
- IAHSS Basic Certification obtained within 90 days of employment; IAHSS Advanced Certification within the first year of employment.
- Valid and current state‑issued driver’s license required.
- Must maintain and provide proof of automobile insurance at their own expense, meeting at least the state minimum liability coverage limits.
- Must successfully pass a criminal and driving record background check prior to hiring and annually thereafter.
- Desired experience in law enforcement, military, corrections, or security.
- Training and experience with conflict resolution and ability to de‑escalate hostile situations desirable.
The position requires good physical health, including standing or walking for long periods, standing, sitting or walking for long periods, and lifting at least 100 pounds. Physical effort distribution: constant (67%-100%) – talking, hearing, seeing; frequently (34%-66%) – balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling/feeling; occasionally (1%-33%) – lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, climbing stairs or ladders, crawling.
