INTRODUCTION:

This position acts as a land steward to protect, enhance, and manage the Tribal land base, including fee and trust parcels in accordance with Tribal policies for safety, security and protection of all properties to support Tribal objectives. This position is focused on maintaining access, ecological integrity, use monitoring, public engagement, and resource protection.

DUTIES:
  • Patrol Tribal lands for any unlawful, ecologically damaging, or unpermitted activities.
  • Engagement with property users, neighbors, contractors, and other agency personnel during the course of property stewardship duties.
  • Install, monitor and maintain an inventory of surveillance equipment, and continuously assess for further security measures.
  • Survey Tribal lands for any invasive or noxious weeds, wildfire presence or hazards on the property.
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair buildings, gates, fences, trails and road infrastructure for functional integrity.
  • Inventory, map, and maintain records of roads, gates, and respective locks and combinations on Tribal lands.
  • Install and maintain fencing infrastructure.
  • Build, install, and maintain posted signage, marquees, information center signs, and trail signs.
  • Control noxious or invasive weeds on Tribal lands using chemical, mechanical, and biological control methods.
  • Remove debris and garbage as needed to maintain healthy, productive Tribal lands.
  • Clear roads of brush, debris and small landslides using chainsaws, hand tools and heavy equipment.
  • Serve as contract inspector when needed on noxious weed, road brushing, gate installation, or other land management contracts.
  • Prepare maps, charts, photos, and other documents which provide for a permanent record of activities and assets on the Tribal land base.
  • Assist with habitat restoration projects on Tribal lands.
  • Assist Biological Program Manager, Forest Manager, and Fire Manager in execution of land stewardship activities as directed by the Natural Resources Director.
  • May occasionally lead or direct other staff or volunteers in completing specific projects.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

High School diploma or GED, and one year experience in the natural resources field, one year of chainsaw use (200 equivalency hours), and 2 years' experience (800 equivalency hours) of heavy equipment usage including but not limited to:
Tractor, excavator, skid steer, forklift, PTOs, hydraulics, augers, mowers.

Knowledge of:
  • The safe operation of various motor vehicles and equipment.
  • The safe operation of power tools including chainsaws.
  • Use of remote security footage technology such as game cameras.
  • The principles, practices and techniques of fence construction, basic carpentry, and building maintenance.
  • Basic principles of ecology, restoration, forestry or other closely related disciplines.
Experience in:
  • Using MS Excel for data entry, MS Word for summary reports, and Google Earth for mapping.
  • Maintaining and operating power equipment such as weed eaters, trimmers, mowers, and chainsaws.
  • Maintaining and operating heavy equipment including but not limited to:
    Tractor, excavator, skid steer, forklift, PTOs, hydraulics, augers, mowers, etc.
  • Maintaining and operating trailers while towing equipment.
Ability to:
  • Work extended hours, including early mornings, late evenings and weekends as necessary to fulfill the needs of the Department.
  • Safely operate chainsaws, weed eaters, and other power tools for extended periods of time.
  • Routinely lift 50 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Travel to remote properties to perform work, as necessary.
  • Operate and perform basic maintenance of heavy equipment such as tractors, excavators, and skid steers, etc.
  • Identify noxious weeds and obtain herbicide applicator's license within 1 year of hire.
  • Install, maintain, and repair gates, fence panels, and wire fences.
Other:
  • Be in good physical condition with the ability to ascend and descend steep slopes, work in heavy brush and inclement weather to perform strenuous physical labor.
  • Must be a well-organized self-starter with the ability to communicate effectively, work well with others as well as independently.
  • Obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid within 60-days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid State driver's license, insurance and be eligible to drive a GSA vehicle.
  • Must obtain and maintain an Oregon Pesticide Applicators License within 1 year of hire.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver License Class A or B within 1 year of hire.
Salary Description

$28.73/per hr.
