Responsibilities
- Assist workers of various skilled trades by performing tasks as directed by a journey level worker.
- Operate hand and power tools, jackhammers, pavement breakers, chipping hammers, vibrators, grinders, and construction equipment.
- Operate, control, clean, and maintain heavy power equipment safely and efficiently.
- Perform routine operation and maintenance tasks of the facility, assisting journey level workers with sub‑journey level work in the project trades.
- Perform clean‑up tasks, return of materials and tools, reassembly of components, removal of temporary scaffolding, bracing, or other appendages needed by work performed.
- Assist with cleaning surfaces or assemblies by washing, sanding, scraping, wire brushing, sand blasting, steam cleaning, etc.
- Disassemble uncomplicated units or parts as directed.
- Erect pre‑fabricated staging or scaffolding.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination based on a background investigation.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license at time of appointment.
- Must complete a pre‑employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued required level of physical health and fitness.
- Must be able to lift heavy objects (up to 45 lbs) and meet vision, hearing, and visual discrimination requirements for safe operation of equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work of a Utility Worker (TC‑C) with normal supervision.
- Experience in performing common tasks of a Utility Worker in an industrial setting: assembling and passing tools, carrying tools and equipment to work sites, assisting with gathering materials, using hand tools to complete tasks, cleaning and storing tools.
- Ability to work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey‑level employee.
Work requires frequent arm and leg movement, handling equipment and materials, frequent lifting up to and occasionally over 45 lbs, prolonged standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, pushing, and kneeling. Work is subject to strains from lifting and pulling heavy objects.
Working ConditionsWork is performed inside and outside. Indoor work often occurs in dim, damp, and cold areas. Outdoor work frequently involves exposure to hot sun and adverse weather. Protective clothing and equipment (e.g., respirators, goggles, gloves) are required. Hazards include falls from heights, injury from power and hand tools, electric shock, drowning, cuts, bruises, noise, dust, and fumes.
