Heavy Equipment Mechanic
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
This classification performs the repair, overhaul, maintenance and servicing of construction and other heavy equipment; also performs any needed work on other mobile equipment, such as car pool vehicles, as the workload indicates such need. Repair and maintenance on Small Engines such as lawnmowers, snowblowers, pumps, etc.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks under the supervision of the Shop Foreman who frequently reviews for adherence to the instruction on those tasks to be completed and to the appropriate practices.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDMay provide lead worker responsibility for positions at a lower classification.
EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES(The following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management).
- Repairs such equipment as heavy duty diesel trucks, front-end loaders, motor graders, truck type tractors, and other off the road equipment as used in road construction or bridge building.
- Performs major or minor repairs on engines, transmissions, drive chains, hydraulic systems: also performs major overhauls to this same equipment depending on condition of components: evaluates equipment and recommends to shop foreman whether or not repair falls within shop capabilities and if manpower and equipment capabilities are available: performs all possible work on heavy equipment in order to minimize the need for outside services.
- Performs welding, cutting: does some rebuilding and some prefabrication.
- Performs general overhaul maintenance and repair of machinery and construction equipment.
- Performs shop work in accordance with work orders authorizing such work; maintains records of job costs, including labor and materials, in accordance with the Chart of Accounts; makes labor and material costs available to the shop foreman for transmission to the Cost Clerk in the Auditor’s Department.
- Maintains “good housekeeping” in general work area; observes all Safety Rules and Regulations; performs work in the safest and most efficient manner.
- Schedules work in accordance with the shop foreman’s plans; performs maintenance and tune-ups to assist in the servicing area as needed.
- Performs varied duties, either by himself or under supervision, involving any and all work brought to the shop; although the incumbent’s primary duties remain unchanged from those of the heavy duty mechanic.
- Regular physical attendance at the employer’s facility is required.
Five years equipment mechanic experience or other satisfactory combination of experience and training. Possession of a valid class A CDL with an acceptable driving record per the County’s vehicle policy.
GUIDELINESWork is performed under Federal and State specifications in accordance with department policies, procedures, operators’ manuals and permit regulations. Supervisor is available to interpret guidelines
PERSONAL CONTACTS AND PURPOSE OF CONTACTSContacts are with co-workers and the public to exchange information or provide service.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENTWorked is performed outdoors and in a mechanic shop; will be exposed to fumes, vibration, noise, adverse weather conditions. This position also requires bending, climbing, kneeling, lifting up to 60 pounds, reaching, sitting, standing, stooping, walking, crawling, working at heights and walking rough terrain.
HOURS WORKED PER WEEK40 (generally works 5 eight hour days Monday – Friday). Evening and weekend work may be required due to emergencies and bad road conditions due to weather.
