Maintain an effective, professional demeanor at all times by establishing and maintaining rapport with all contacts including: staff, parents, vendors and supervision.
Supervise maintenance, custodial staff, and drivers including assigning/monitoring work, providing up-to-date training, resolving conflicts, assisting with interviewing applicants and conducting performance evaluations.
Plans and administers the overall operation of the department, checks work progress, operational efficiency, and initiates improvements wherever possible.
Possess in-depth knowledge of safety standards, federal and state laws, Arizona Department of Education regulations, and Governing Board policies and procedures directly related to maintenance and transportation.
Sufficient broad-based mechanical knowledge to supervise equipment maintenance and repairs, supervise bus mechanic and assist drivers when necessary.
Sufficient construction knowledge to perform building maintenance/repair, electrical work, etc.
Monitor budgets to stay within guidelines, and purchase supplies and distribute as required.
Work in conjunction with Human Resources to review applicants, interview and select the best-qualified candidates to match qualifications of bus driver positions.
Actively train and supervise new bus drivers in accordance with all DOT and DPS laws and regulations.
Serves as a backup bus driver when necessary.
SchedulingCoordinate and direct the district maintenance and custodial staff to effectively maintain all grounds and buildings in a safe, clean and orderly fashion at all times.
Prioritize and assign workloads to maintenance and custodians to accomplish tasks on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and seasonal basis.
Maintain current information posted on marquee per requests from the Superintendent.
Coordinate and direct the district transportation program utilizing related computer programs, maps and charts to establish routes that efficiently cover transporting students to and from school on time.
Establish regular and special needs routes, schedules and stops and provide maps for drivers as needed.
Coordinate all student transportation activities with department heads, school officials and other individuals to meet transportation requirements for normal routes and special requests and activities.
Work with district and school personnel to implement route changes and bus stops to ensure maximum safety and cost effectiveness.
CommunicationEffectively supervise all staff and ensure that routes are covered and students are delivered to and from school on time daily.
Promptly mediate all parent/student and teacher issues and complaints relative to transportation.
Participate in student/parent conferences to help resolve and prevent misconduct that cause unsafe conditions in transportation.
Advise school level staff of discipline problems immediately using the discipline form.
Advise parents via phone and mail of all discipline problems and suspensions immediately.
MaintenanceEstablish a regular preventative maintenance and repair schedule in accordance with the Arizona School Facility Board for tractors, fire extinguishers, air conditioning/heating units, playground equipment and all other equipment used by the maintenance and custodial department.
Maintain grounds areas including but not limited to playgrounds, athletic fields, parking areas, fencing, sidewalks, grass and gravel areas, etc.
Establish a regular schedule to clean carpets and floors; repair/replace windows, locks and light fixtures, emergency light fixtures and classroom preparation.
Ensure refrigeration equipment and food warming equipment is functioning properly at correct temperatures.
Work with School Facilities Board to manage projects and maintain campus.
SafetyEnsure the district is in compliance with all OSHA requirements and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are readily available to the staff and public upon request.
Ensure electrical systems including emergency lighting systems, wiring and outlets are in compliance with fire codes and all alarms are functioning correctly.
Verify that all tools are properly stored and securely locked.
Ensure all combustible materials are properly stored and securely locked.
Daily inspect walkways and entrances and make certain they are free from obstructions.
Conduct accident investigations, including drug testing, and supervise all reporting to appropriate law enforcement and insurance officials.
Along with the mechanic, develop preventative maintenance programs, which are in compliance with all safety requirements.
Receive driver reports on mechanical problems that cause hazards and ensure all repairs are completed prior to the bus being put back on the road.
Daily complete all vehicle mileage and fuel reports as required by DPS.
Conduct continuing driver training and traffic safety programs and hold regular staff meetings to address pertinent changes in DOT and DPS requirements and laws.
