Responsibilities
- Provide customer service and perform a wide variety of paraprofessional tasks related to library circulation.
- Greet patrons and ensure patron needs are satisfied.
- Perform circulation desk procedures such as checking in and checking out materials, emptying the book drop, collecting and recording fines and fees, and processing and sending out overdue notices.
- Sort and route daily mail; pack and unpack daily deliveries.
- Carry out routine procedures necessary for the daily functioning of the automated system.
- Process patron holds and maintain the holds shelf.
- Register new patrons by verifying identification and address information and entering data in the library computer system.
- Monitor activity in the library and take action to maintain behavior expectations in a friendly but firm manner when needed.
- Maintain confidentiality of patron information.
- Perform all aspects of opening and closing the circulation desk.
- Process library materials for inclusion in the collection as directed.
- Inspect returned materials, follow up with patrons by phone or email as needed.
- Cooperate and communicate with other departments, staff, and SCLS staff regarding patron issues.
- Answer and route incoming phone calls as needed.
- Assist with circulation, directional, and procedural questions.
- Answer basic reference questions and redirect more involved queries to appropriate personnel.
- Promote library programs and register patrons for programs.
- Assist patrons with the mechanical operations of library equipment; perform basic troubleshooting of technical equipment.
- Assist with mending and withdrawal of library materials.
- Document receipt and return of inter‑library loan materials.
- Assist with library programs as directed; prepare displays and maintain the public bulletin board.
- Shelve library materials and read shelves for accuracy of order.
- Support library pages by answering questions and providing direction on tasks appropriately.
- Assist in monitoring volunteers.
- Reconcile daily cash receipts and prepare weekly deposits, including cash register and copier coin‑op receipts, and in‑library Friends of the Library donations.
- Assist with circulation reports; check in materials for inventory of the library collection.
- Attend staff and department meetings and participate in required training sessions.
- Stay current on library information, policies, and procedures by regularly reading communication including email and the staff blog.
- Complete light housekeeping tasks, including dusting and cleaning, as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of library experience using computer applications.
