Para educator II – Purpose

The Para educator II assists the teacher in the delivery of an instructional program, preparing the classroom and materials to support individual and small groups of students. The Para educator II supports behavioral management and life‑skill development, maintains student and classroom management, and provides supervision to ensure a safe and orderly environment.

Nature & Scope

The Para educator II works with students aged five to twenty‑one in schools, specialized classrooms, the community, and on the bus. The incumbent works independently for most of the day, providing supervision, life‑skills training, and direct instruction under the teacher’s direction. The role follows district and state regulations, interfaces with students, teachers, administrators, parents, and colleagues, and requires professional decorum and composure in high‑stakes interactions.

Job Functions
  • Conduct in the best interest of students, honoring the highest standards of public education and the district’s mission.
  • Assist with academic instruction and material presentation, individually or with small groups: reinforcing instruction, following up on language, spelling, reading, mathematics and other subject areas.
  • Monitor and oversee student tasks, practices, and assignments in various subjects.
  • Support classroom assignments, homework, and projects.
  • Implement behavior plans independently.
  • Assist in community‑based activities off‑site and accompany students on transportation.
  • Prepare and implement instructional materials using technology and assistive devices.
  • Provide physical accommodation: assist mobility device use, lift students, aid orthopedic devices, apply medical plans, and provide assistance such as feeding, toileting, restraining, and other physical support.
  • Encourage acceptable student behavior, maintain discipline, and manage conflicts.
  • Guide students in emotional control, hygiene, and social judgment; coach during job performance.
  • Support the teacher in setting up work areas and managing supplies.
  • Collaborate with teachers about lesson plans and materials.
  • Supervise activities across playground, cafeteria, bus loading, field trips, and gathering areas.
  • Prepare, administer, and score tests and assignments as directed.
  • Collect and record student performance data in a computerized system.
  • Assist students with questions, examples, and general guidance.
  • Implement a Functional Living Program to support independent tasks such as shop, cook, budget, and public‑transportation travel.
  • Provide structured training at community job sites, explaining preparation, transportation, and safety.
  • Perform clerical duties: ordering, preparing, duplicating materials, filing, phone calls, compiling reports, taking attendance, and ensuring accuracy and deadlines.
  • Follow oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality, and maintain effective relationships with staff, students, and parents from diverse cultures.

Compliance with district policies, the Code of Professional Conduct, and required training is mandatory.

Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree, preferably in education or related field.
  • Or high‑school diploma/GED plus a qualifying state or local assessment score in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • District‑approved Oregon behavioral intervention training certificate (active).
  • Understanding of child‑development principles and experience in instructional techniques and behavior management.
  • Effective communication skills with tact, courtesy, and judgment.
