Job Summary: To provide educational programs to meet the individual needs of elementary school aged children with disabilities and/or special needs who are enrolled in a self-contained classroom; working collaboratively in a behavioral school setting with mental health professionals to provide a cohesive program for students who are unable to access the educational program in a less restrictive environment due to their behavioral and emotional needs.

Duties:

  • Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEP) for each student that addresses their needs comprehensively.
  • Utilize appropriate strategies (behavioral and instructional), materials, and other available resources that will assist the student to achieve the goals and objectives that are addressed in the IEP.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication among school staff and other agencies to ensure smooth transition between rooms for those students who are mainstreamed.
  • Maintains open communications with students, parents/guardians, and other agencies by devising a regular system for communication.
  • Prepare and maintain records of student's progress.
  • Communicates expectations and monitors and reinforces student behavior positively to facilitate learning.
  • Provides direction, assistance, and professional guidance to classroom instructional and support staff.
  • Works with specialists to provide each student with the full range of needed services.
  • Meets with staff in team meetings regularly to formulate intervention strategies to address the lagging skills of students.
  • Participates in the collection and reporting of program data for each student and program as a whole.
  • Helps students identify appropriate options when needing support.
  • Uses data including thinking skills inventory and option plans to address student's social/emotional needs.
  • Trains and uses instructional assistants as necessary and is responsible for overseeing all Instructional Assistant (IA) activities.
  • Progress monitoring through the use of curriculum-based assessments - Monitor student progress.
  • Ability to take lead role in the de-escalation of students.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Education and/or

Experience:

  • Applicants must hold or qualify for an Oregon Teaching Certificate, with a SPED endorsement.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education.
  • Experience in academic training in any field of special education.
  • Ability to effectively handle working in an environment serving students who are struggling with severe emotional and/or mental health related difficulties.
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, policies, and trends regarding instruction of students with emotional and/or mental health related complexities.
  • Knowledge of a variety of evaluation and behavior management techniques.
  • Standard First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification within two months of hire, may be required.
