NWREC Nursery Student Technical Assistant
Position Summary: This position is a part‑time (up to 24 hours per week) Student Technical Assistant in the North Willamette Research & Extension Center’s Nursery Crop Production Research Program located in Aurora, OR.
Responsibilities- Plant research – hand weeding plots, checking irrigation emitters for plots, measuring plant health, mixing potting media for containers, seeding and thinning container plants, transplanting or seeding plots, downloading data from loggers, cleaning research workspace and storage area, labeling plots, monitoring greenhouse and lath house climate.
- Buildings, grounds, and equipment maintenance – maintain buildings, grounds, fences, roads, and other research facilities; manage land not currently involved in research projects (including mowing, string trimming, pruning, mulching, and hand weeding).
- Data collection – assist with biomass sampling, seed harvest, and data collection for nursery production trials according to study protocols; keep records of activities; assist with preparing orders for procurement; assist the Nursery program in conducting tours, training, and field days for the public.
- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study.
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment.
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard:
High School student – Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home‑schooling program;
Undergraduate and post‑baccalaureate student – 6 credit hours per term;
Undergraduate international student – 12 credit hours per term;
Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School – 5 credit hours per term;
Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School – 9 credit hours per term. - Students under 18 must have passed a tractor safety certification class prior to operating a tractor.
- Perform assigned tasks without close supervision.
- Capable of working outside and standing/walking for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift 25 lbs.
- Student employees may be selected to drive to offsite locations at the request of the Nursery Program supervisor.
- Experience with tractors (for students over 18).
- Work is mainly performed outdoors at the research farm, in scientific laboratories, research greenhouses, and office settings.
- Ability to work in and dress appropriately for all weather conditions.
- Duties may include lifting heavy objects (up to 50 lbs), standing, kneeling or crawling for long periods, walking over plowed fields or uneven surfaces, and other strenuous activities such as hoeing weeds, shoveling, operating push mowers, and string trimmers.
