Position: Assistant Professor (Practice)

Overview

Assistant Professor (Practice) – Oregon State University

Department:
Animal & Rangeland Sciences Extension Program;
Division of Extension and Engagement

Location:

Roseburg, Oregon (OSU Extension Douglas County office). 12-month, full-time, fixed-term (1.0 FTE).

Responsibilities
  • 65% – Extension programming
    • Extension teaching that uses inclusive, evidence-based practices and learner mentorship.
    • Conduct needs assessments to determine educational needs of broad audiences.
    • Develop, facilitate, and implement comprehensive livestock production and natural resources education, including pasture management and forages related to livestock production, in assigned counties.
    • Deliver research-based information through multiple channels (newsletters, programs, meetings, site visits, field tours, consultations, digital media, websites, video conferencing, hybrid formats, PACE, and other tools).
    • Design culturally inclusive materials for Extension programs; develop evaluation protocols to measure impact locally and beyond.
    • Utilize digital communications and CRM tools; maintain brand and digital publishing standards.
    • Provide one-on-one consultation; engage diverse adult and youth audiences; include access and inclusion considerations in programming.
    • Contribute to annual plan of work, impact statements, and accomplishments documentation.
  • 65% – Partnerships, collaboration, networking
    • Develop formal and informal networks; collaborate with commodity organizations and producer groups as appropriate.
    • Identify Extension program needs through advisory groups and stakeholder engagement; collaborate with research and Extension faculty.
    • Engage with community and regional organizations to support innovation and economic development; work with statewide faculty and extension units to deliver programs.
  • 15% – Applied research
    • Conduct applied research to support Extension programming; evaluate and report program impacts.
    • Disseminate findings via peer-reviewed outlets, meetings, and digital channels; pursue outside grants and contracts to support programs.
  • 15% – Scholarship and Promotion
  • 5% – Service
What You Will Need
  • Master of Science in animal sciences, rangeland ecology and management, agronomy, or related field;
    Bachelor’s degree in a science field; degree must be completed by start date.
  • Strong background in livestock or irrigated forage production; demonstrated adult teaching skills; strong verbal and written communication.
  • Must obtain and maintain an Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Consultant License within six months of employment.
  • Commitment to inclusive, safe, and welcoming learning environments.
  • Computer literacy; proficiency with standard office software and collaborative platforms.
  • Ability to use multiple digital communications tools (websites, newsletters, social media, etc.).
  • Ability to work in teams and independently; ability to communicate scientific information clearly to diverse stakeholders; knowledge of basic field research methods.
  • Willingness to travel by driving to assigned sites; this is a critical/ security-sensitive position requiring background checks as per university policy.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Experience with cattle and sheep production in wet or semi-arid environments; forage management experience;
    Extension or informal education delivery experience.
  • Knowledge of CAFO-related issues; ability to secure external funding; ability to incorporate diverse cultural perspectives in instructional design.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Field-based duties with exposure to inclement weather.
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends; travel to provide programming across the Southern region.
