Position . The Southern Oregon Education Service District (SOESD) has a position opening for an Itinerant Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI). This role provides instruction and related services for visually impaired children in their homes, local schools, and within the community.

About SOESD

SOESD is located in the Rogue Valley, the cultural and economic heart of southern Oregon. The region offers diverse outdoor activities and cultural venues, including the Britt Music Festival, the Ashland Independent Film Festival, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

Position Goal

Provide instruction and related services for visually impaired children in their homes, local schools, and within the community.

Essential Functions
  • Know and understand the objectives of the regional program, its activities, and evaluation process.
  • Secure needed compliance forms and medical data on assigned students.
  • Assess students’ needs using pre- and post-tests.
  • Confer with parents and professionals to meet student needs.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teams and individual educational plans.
  • Establish, maintain, and update schedules of visits to schools and homes.
  • Instruct students using prescriptive programs, directly or through consultation with paraprofessionals, professionals, and parents.
  • Teach compensatory skill areas unique to vision loss, such as braille reading and writing, and use of assistive technology.
  • Demonstrate ability to utilize behavior management in shaping appropriate personal and social behaviors.
  • Communicate and consult with professionals and parents of visually impaired students.
  • Order special supplies and equipment, maintain accurate records and return borrowed materials at the end of the school year.
  • Attend staff meetings and other scheduled in-service meetings.
  • Utilize community agencies to meet the individual needs of students and families.
  • Assist in parent education in providing knowledge of unique educational needs.
  • Perform physical requirements unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.
  • Perform job‑related tasks as assigned by supervisor or coordinator.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with SOESD employees, local education agency representatives, and others contacted during the course of the workday.
  • Follow established SOESD policies and procedures.
  • Minimum Prerequisites
    • Oregon Basic or Standard Visually Handicapped License
    Length of Position

    190 days (academic year) – 0.5 FTE

    Salary

    $31,288.48 to $53,946.56 for the 2026‑2027 school year. This amount includes a $4,000 stipend under the Licensed Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    Immediate Supervisor

    PVI Department Chair, with appropriate involvement of the Regional Programs Coordinator.
