Position Title: Field Instructor

Department: Instructional Services / Northwest Outdoor Science School

Location: Outdoor School (Various Locations in NW Oregon)

Reports To: Outdoor School Site Supervisor

Compensation: NOSS Salary Schedule ($21.67 - $25.89 per hour, DOE)

2026/2027 Dates: Fall 2026 Session: 9/14/26-11/10/26;
Spring 2027 Session: 2/18/27-6/2/27

In partnership with the communities we serve, Northwest Regional ESD improves student learning by providing equitable access to high quality services and support.

In alignment with the NWRESD's mission statement, this position assumes responsibility for the planning and implementation of field-based environmental education programs at residential Outdoor Science School sites.

This position is overnight, requiring the employee to live on-site during the work week Monday-Friday. Room and board are provided. Our program operates at multiple sites in Northwest Oregon near the following communities:
Vernonia, Salem, Cloverdale, and Rockaway Beach. This position is seasonal, but there may be an opportunity available to continue employment in future sessions.

The employee will be compensated 50 hours per week. Weekly schedule varies from Monday-Friday or Sunday-Thursday. Most work weeks are 5 days. Due to the seasonal camp-based nature of this position, it is exempt from state overtime wage regulations.

• College graduate or equivalent amount of directly related experience.
• Ability and desire to work with children.
• Training, knowledge, and previous work experience with relevant subject matter.
• Valid American Red Cross Basic First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate or ability to obtain certificate within timeline specified by district.
• Ability to establish and maintain good relationships in a residential work environment.

• Confer regularly with immediate supervisor
• Proficient in the use of computer and internet-based applications, including but not limited to email, internet software, Google Suite, and word processing (MS Word)
• Ability to manage both large and small groups of students safely through various program activities.
• Knowledge of or ability to learn best practices in Outdoor Education to share content knowledge with students attending the Outdoor School program.
• Ability to work on a team and collaborate with others.
• Knowledge of restorative practices and compassionate conflict resolution.
• Personable, timely, and communicative.
• Ability to follow lesson plans as provided by Northwest Outdoor Science School.

• Train counselors (high school & college volunteers) to teach field study content.
• Mentor counselors and staff assistants while they teach elementary and middle school students.
• Provide direct instruction to elementary students.
• Develop lesson plans and outlines of duties for counselors and teachers.
• Prepare teaching and student guides and other necessary instructional materials.
• Use small group study in a discovery approach under instructor guidance.
• Motivate students to be informed, concerned, and involved in their environment.
• Meet with teachers daily to plan instructional activities to meet the needs of the students.
