Job Overview
Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) – responsible for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within an AWS Gov Cloud data center operates at peak efficiency. The CE serves as the technical lead for onsite Engineering Operations Technicians (EOT) and third‑party vendors, acting as the single point of contact for all facility operations.
Key Responsibilities- Act as the primary escalation point for all facilities‑related issues and oversee routine and emergency maintenance of critical systems such as switch gear, generators, UPS, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, and building monitoring systems.
- Perform root‑cause analysis and troubleshoot facility equipment within internal Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Provide training and guidance to EOTs and collaborate with the Facility Manager (FM) to establish team culture.
- Develop and deploy standard practices for CEs, EOTs, and vendor support teams.
- Assist in the construction of new facilities and projects to improve current facility efficiency.
- Work outside normal business hours for routine maintenance and respond to out‑of‑hours emergency calls.
- Communicate complex technical information to non‑technical audiences.
- Coordinate projects with IT managers and business leaders to manage capacity, plant safety, performance, reliability, and efficiency.
- Ensure all safety procedures are followed by vendor and Amazon staff.
- Establish performance benchmarks, conduct analyses, and prepare reports on critical facility operations and maintenance.
- Utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other basic administrative tools for day‑to‑day tasks.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently.
- Participate in group lifts of 40+ pounds.
- Maintain balance and perform tasks while on a ladder.
- Walk, use hands and fingers, handle, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb stairs, twist, bend, work above shoulders, grasp, carry, push, and pull objects into position.
- Work in an environment requiring ear protection.
- Ability to travel to or commute between data center locations as needed.
- Willingness to temporarily work at alternative sites during training periods or until the assigned facility is operational.
- Travel frequency will vary based on business needs and facility status.
The CE is Amazon’s front line for hands‑on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting. Responsibilities include maintaining and troubleshooting mission‑critical equipment such as stand‑by diesel generators, fuel systems, three‑phase electrical systems, UPS units, PDUs, wet cell batteries, CRAHU units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water systems, air handlers, motors, fire/life safety equipment, building automation systems, and general facilities equipment. The CE directs, trains, and supports technicians, implements and executes site‑specific training exercises, manages projects from conception to completion, and collaborates with engineering, automation, processing, and finance teams locally and globally.
