Position SummaryThe National Organizer is a full-time position based in Oregon to serve the West Coast as part of Race Forward's newly formed Movement Building (MB) department, advancing a just multiracial democracy via organizing, narrative and cogovernance strategies.
This position is included in a union-represented collective bargaining unit, and specific employment terms and conditions are subject to collective bargaining.
Duties and Responsibilities- Primarily focused on Oregon but supporting other western states, this role contributes towards overall national organizing team goals of building durable organizing infrastructure through Public School Strong (PSS), a multistakeholder national school district organizing initiative anchored by the HEAL (Honest Education, Action and Leadership) Together program. The National Organizer will establish statewide organizing committees and multiracial organizing coalitions affiliated with PSS to connect teams across their state for coordinated campaigns to protect and strengthen public education at the local, state and federal level.
- The National Organizer will work with PSS leaders and organizers to ongoingly develop effective and aligned campaign strategy and build out a broad base through fundamental organizing practices including but not limited to prospecting and leadership identification, phone banking, canvassing and digital outreach, holding organizing one‑on‑ones and coaching sessions and facilitating organizing skills‑building workshops, organizing meetings, and public events or actions in coordination with our movement partners.
- Participate in movement events, conferences and meetings to build Race Forward's organizational relationships and work to connect our movements.
- Organization‑wide responsibilities:
- Participate in all grassroots fundraising campaigns. Participate in cross‑department meetings, committees and teams.
- Facilitate and take notes for internal meetings on a rotating basis.
- Provide support and participation for organization‑wide and regional campaigns and events.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to energize, inspire, and move people to action.
- Strong understanding of public education organizing and narrative change, with experience leading community organizing and advocacy campaigns. Experience with distributed organizing, community‑labor solidarity and voter engagement also preferred.
- Excellent public speaking, facilitation, and training skills, with a reliable ability to explain race‑explicit content and synthesize and translate complex concepts.
- Clear understanding of the work, struggles, and equity challenges of organizers and communicators.
- Intuitive ability to build and maintain relationships with key players in the political and narrative landscape.
- Excellent project management skills.
- Ability to collaborate with diverse team.
- Excellent ability to track and maintain data.
- Excellent attention to detail and follow‑through.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Strong commitment to social justice, racial justice, and multi‑generational movement building.
