POSITION SUMMARY

The Licensed Practical Nurse implements and evaluates direct care for detoxification and rehabilitation patients. This role also oversees the work of medical and clinical assistants as assigned, and reports to the Charge Nurse and/or the Nursing Shift Supervisor.

Primary duties and responsibilities

Implements/supervises the plan of care for detoxification patients, evaluating effectiveness based on clinical findings.

Interprets, transcribes, implements or supervises physician’s orders according to policies and procedures.

Administers and documents medications according to policies and procedures, excluding IV medications.

Triages rehabilitation patients, treating and referring per physician’s orders and policies; consults with RN staff as needed.

Oversees the work of medical and clinical assistants as assigned.

Implements and evaluates strategies to manage physical health problems, including teaching.

Performs CPR and First Aid as needed, including AED use per policies and procedures.

Documents pertinent clinical information into the electronic patient record.

Acts as Charge Nurse for shift as assigned, with telephone backup of RN/MD at all times.

Manages the overall operations of the assigned shift.

Coordinates administrative tasks for the unit, including medication record/chart audits and emergency medication/equipment audits.

Ensures a welcoming, safe and healing environment for each patient and family throughout the continuum of care.

Recommends ways to improve the quality and delivery of services.

Maintains confidentiality of company and patient information.

Reacts productively to change.

Performs other duties as assigned, including those of Patient Care Partner (see related job description).

Supervisory responsibilities

None except when assigned Charge; in that capacity, supervises other LPN staff and medical assistants on the assigned shift, consulting with the ADON/DON as needed.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited practical nursing program with a current Tennessee LPN license in good standing.
One (1) year post-licensure medical/surgical experience preferred, particularly in behavioral healthcare.
CPI, First Aid/CPR and AED certification required or eligible.
Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
Ability to quickly learn and use various clinical software.
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and information interpretation abilities.
Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and patient needs in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to analyze complex situations and make crucial decisions with appropriate consultation.
Open and culturally sensitive to a wide variety of patients’ experiences.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Ability to interact with patients and co-workers collaboratively and professionally, providing guidance and training as needed.
Ability to apply information regarding cultural/age/population-specific characteristics to patient care.
Reacts productively to change.
Ability to de-escalate a person in crisis calmly; work professionally in stressful situations and collaborate with people in crisis.
If recovering, two (2) years of verifiable abstinence required; active participation in a twelve-step program preferred.

Work environment

Position is in a rehabilitation setting on a campus, requiring walking outside to various buildings and normal safety precautions.
Frequent contact with chemically impaired individuals in crisis, including emotionally volatile patients; may require additional safety precautions.
May perform CPR/First Aid as needed (certified or eligible).
Shifts may vary, including weekends and overnight stays for inclement weather as part of critical staffing, with some travel to other Cumberland Heights facilities.
Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and/or push/pull up to 100 lbs; move around campus on uneven and rural terrain.
Ability to speak, hear, see, sit, stand, kneel, stoop, balance, reach, and use fine/gross motor skills.
