Job Description – HVAC Mechanic (Airport) (240000OP)

Location: St. Louis Lambert International Airport

Employees assigned to St. Louis Lambert International Airport may be eligible for a commuting allowance of $180.00 bi-weekly.

This position is selected for the Hiring Incentive Program. The incentive shall be in the amount of one thousand five hundred dollars ($1500.00). The hiring incentive will be paid (if funds are available) by the Department/Division which appoints the applicant.
The hiring incentive is not available to current City employees.

Incumbents in this position are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing heating, ventilating and air conditioning and refrigerating equipment and systems within St. Louis Lambert International Airport.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex mechanical air conditioning, refrigeration systems, heating and ventilating equipment found in commercial and institutional type buildings; air conditioners, heat pumps, gas‑fired hot water boilers, gas furnaces, pumps, air handlers, exhaust air units, make‑up air units, electrical power and control circuits, gas piping, condensate pump and drain lines, fan coil units, condensing units, unit heaters, radiant and fan‑forced heaters, refrigerated air dryers, and hydronic heating and cooling systems, etc.
  • Must be proficient in using tools and equipment pertinent to the trade.
  • Must be proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, control diagrams, and HVAC equipment, electrical schematic control wiring diagrams.
  • Performs related work such as making and assembling metal ducts and chassis parts for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Data Utilization:
    Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and/or reference data, statutes and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.
  • Human Interaction:
    Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
    Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, tune and synchronize, and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as equipment controls, electrical meters, gauges, vacuum pump, hand and power tools, refrigerant recovery equipment and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Verbal Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as work orders, equipment operation logs, schematics, blueprints, parts catalogs, technical operating manuals, equipment installation manuals, material safety data sheets, procedures, guidelines and nonroutine correspondence.
  • Mathematical Aptitude:
    Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate surface area, percentages, fractions and decimals; perform mathematical operations involving basic algebra and geometry.
  • Functional Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
  • Situational Reasoning:
    Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Environmental Factors:
    Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as wetness, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents or toxic/poisonous agents.
