Qualifications
  • Has the ability to assist in organizing and supervising a sports program.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport.
  • Has substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time, should continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
Reports To

The head coach and athletic director, who provide overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the school principals.

Job Goal

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize individual and team success. Also to demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes. To upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultations, etc.

General
  • The success of athletic programs influences the community image of the system. Public exposure is a consideration; community/parent expectations for winning performance exist but must not override objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.
  • The position includes unusual aspects such as extended time, risk of injury, and due process considerations.
  • The description aims to provide sufficient guidance to function. When not specifically covered, a coach should use common sense and good judgment.
  • Duties and Responsibilities
  • Have knowledge of all athletic policies and are responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the sports program.
  • Have knowledge of existing systems, state and league regulations; implement and interpret them for staff.
  • Understand the proper administrative line of command and refer requests or grievances through proper channels.
  • Staff Responsibilities
  • Help establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Help maintain discipline, adjust grievances and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the head coach and/or athletic director/principal.
  • Student Responsibilities
  • Serve as a mentor to each athlete to promote character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Pay attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
  • Be present at practices, games and during travel to provide guidance and safeguards for each participant.
  • Provide training rules and other sport-specific regulations to each participant.
  • Follow policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies.
  • Help complete paperwork on disabling athletic injuries on proper forms.
  • Direct student managers, assistants and statisticians if applicable.
  • Equipment
  • Help with accountability of all equipment.
  • Help properly mark and identify equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorize entry, issuance or requisition of equipment.
  • Ensure athletes are in authorized areas at appropriate times.
  • Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games; ensure cleanliness and maintenance of sport equipment.
  • Secure doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
