Oregon State University operates multiple research vessels within the Office of Marine Operations. The Relief Ordinary Mariner supports safe, efficient vessel and science operations aboard OSU Mid‑Size Research Vessels under the direction of the Master and Mate. Duties include line handling, fendering, basic rigging, mooring/unmooring, cleaning and preparation of ship spaces, and assistance with over‑the‑side scientific operations. The role may stand lookout, perform helm or equipment tending as trained, and assist with routine maintenance of deck gear and safety equipment.
Key Responsibilities- Operational duties (approximately 65%):
Operate and tend ship’s gear—winches, A‑frame, davits, anchor windlass, and capstan—to support research operations; assist with loading/unloading in port; may stand lookout or helm as trained. - Deck maintenance and seamanship (approximately 30%):
Clean, paint, and maintain hull, decks, bulkheads, equipment, masts, quarters, heads, and tanks; assist with mooring/unmooring, line handling, fendering, basic rigging, and handling scientific gear; load and unload equipment and stores. - Safety, drills, and emergency response (approximately 5%):
Participate in shipboard drills and emergency training; maintain firefighting and safety equipment; respond to emergencies per the Station Bill including firefighting and First Aid/CPR.
As licensed/qualified and assigned, may temporarily support other OSU Marine Operations vessels, including Small Boats Program, R/V Taani, or successor/new‑build vessels.
Requirements- No specific education or experience required.
- Merchant Mariner’s Credential with Ordinary Seaman or higher endorsement issued by the Coast Guard.
- STCW endorsements as appropriate.
- Ability to obtain a passport, TWIC, and meet Coast Guard drug‑testing requirements.
- Ability to read, speak, and write in English.
- Experience working at sea on research vessels.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification beyond STCW Basic Training.
- Mechanical, electrical, electronic, or welding skills applicable to vessel/deck maintenance and repair.
This intermittent relief pool position is scheduled as needed on a voyage/project basis and may be at short notice. Service at sea on OSU Mid‑Size Research Vessels ranges from a few hours to several days, and may include extended voyages up to approximately 30 days. Incapacitated by seasickness is not acceptable. Work may be required seven days per week, including weekends and holidays.
Shift assignments may change for operational needs.
Hourly rate: $18.06 to $24.99 per hour. Pay period: 16th – 15th of following month. Pay date: last working day of the month.
