Seasonal (Full Time During Summer, Part Time Spring/Fall) Non-Exempt

Rate of Pay: $20.00-$23.00/hr DOE
Position
Purpose:
The Locomotive Engineer at Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is responsible for the safe operation of our historic steam and diesel locomotives, as well as light maintenance and daily inspections of assigned locomotives. Working as part of a coordinated team with the Locomotive Fireman, the Conductor, and other train crew, the Locomotive Engineer ensures that the locomotive operates efficiently and safely to deliver engaging passenger experience.
Essential Duties: The Locomotive Engineer is required to:
- Ensure the safe operation of OCSR locomotives, following all railroad rules, safety regulations and company polices.
- Perform some hostling tasks and light maintenance tasks to prepare the steam locomotive for operation.
- Perform required daily safety checks, inspections and job briefings.
- The engineer shall work as a team with the conductor and the fireman (in the case of steam) and other train crew members to ensure safe and efficient operation of the train at all times.
- Periodically lubricate the locomotive and perform checks at servicing stops to ensure the locomotive is operating as intended.
- Take great care in handling the train smoothly to provide a safe and enjoyable ride for guests.
- Be jointly responsible for control of the train by keeping note of any restrictions, conditions, or other special instructions that pertain to the day’s work.
- Monitor onboard conditions and locomotive gauges to ensure the locomotive is operating as desired.
- Observe track conditions and possible obstacles when the train is moving, and address any emergencies or service disruptions with calmness, professionalism and a safety minded attitude.
- Ensure proper shutdown of the locomotive at the end of the day’s work.
- Complete required reports and documentation related to trips, delays, or incidents.
- Maintain uniformed appearance by dressing in accordance with OCSR’s dress code for Locomotive Crew.
- Interact with guests in an engaging and cordial manner.
- Maintain Steam Locomotive Fireman certification and fill other crew positions as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Arriving to work on time and ready for duty.
- Proper appearance adhering to the dress code.
- Complies with and enforces all current OCSR policies and procedures.
- Effectiveness at ensuring work is completed on time and to the standards of the railroad by themselves and the crew they are working with.
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with the rest of the staff.
- Timely reporting of concerns and issues to the Operations Supervisor or Chief Mechanical Officer so that they can be addressed in an efficient manner.
- Courteous and efficient relations with guests.
- Good problem-solving skills that are consistent with OCSR policies and procedures.
- Proper handling and treatment of company property.
- Works safely and efficiently and maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
- Attention to and continued development of good operating practices.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma/GED preferred.
- Previous railroad experience of at least 2 years required.
- Previous steam locomotive experience required for candidates wishing to attain Steam Engineer qualification.
- Knowledge of applicable CFR Part 49 regulations pertaining to railroad operations and locomotive inspection practices.
- Must be able to carry out both written and verbal instructions.
- Must have the ability to communicate with team members and work in a team environment.
- Must be able to work in fast paced environment and respond to unplanned events and circumstances.
- Strong verbal, written and communication skills.
- Ability to pass drug/alcohol prescreening and continued drug testing.
- Valid driver license with no DUI/DWI offenses.
