Technician - Stage Lighting

Utah Valley University offers the Stage Lighting Technician role as a dynamic opportunity to contribute directly to high-quality artistic productions while working within a collaborative, creative environment. Supporting the School of the Arts and Events and Production Services (EPS), this position is integral to bringing performances in Dance, Music, Theatre, and Art & Design to life. Working under the direction of the Lighting Manager, the technician helps ensure that theatrical lighting systems are safely, efficiently, and expertly implemented for each production, from load‑in through technical rehearsals and final load‑out.

This role also provides meaningful leadership experience through guiding and mentoring part‑time professional and student electricians, fostering skill development and teamwork in a real‑world production setting. Summary of Responsibilities
  • Participates in teams to set up, maintain, and dismantle light fixtures and the associated lighting, electrical, and rigging equipment used for live productions.
  • Focuses and operates light fixtures, attaches color filters, and other lighting accessories.
  • Leads crews as assigned and assists with their training.
  • Programs and/or operates lighting consoles for live productions in any of the Noorda Center venues.
  • Troubleshoots lighting systems.
  • Monitors assigned productions.
  • Repairs equipment and maintains the shop and storage spaces clean and functional.
  • Assists and teaches student employees and lab students in practical production experiences.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
  • Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate’s degree plus one year of experience in a related field or any combination of education and/or experience related to the position classification summary totaling a minimum of three years.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline plus three years of professional‑level experience in summary of duties or equivalent education and experience totaling seven years. ETCP Entertainment Electrician certification desired.
  • Experience in a multi‑venue University Arts Center is a big plus.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Knowledge
  • Understanding of the maintenance, operation, and installation of theatrical lighting equipment and systems.
  • Moderate knowledge and experience with programming and operating ETC Eos family lighting consoles.
  • Knowledge of intelligent equipment, including LED and moving lights.
  • Knowledge of integrated lighting networks, particularly ETC Net

  • Knowledge of video projection and Q‑Lab is a plus.
Skills
  • Familiarity with Light wright and Vectorworks.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Moderate skills in reading and executing theatrical lighting plots.
  • Basic skill in troubleshooting lighting systems and plots to the component level.
  • Basic skills in repairing and maintaining theatrical lighting equipment and systems.
  • Skilled at creating and working with practicals and special effects, including installing and controlling LEDs.
  • Coordinate work with scenic and property shops.
  • Good computer skills and use of spreadsheets, calendars, and time management applications.
  • Good organizational skills; deadline driven with proven ability to manage changing priorities.
  • Decision‑making, problem‑solving, and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to keeping work spaces organized and clean.
  • Lighting design skills are a plus.
  • Opportunities for design if qualified.
  • Basic skills in assessing the physical, electrical, and data needs from lighting designers’ drawings.
Abilities
