WHAT YOU WILL DO as a Planning Intern:
You will bridge the gap between academic theory and municipal practice. You will support our professional planners by:
Data Visualization & Mapping:
Utilize GIS software to create maps and exhibits for public hearings and internal reports. Property Research:
Conduct deep-dive analysis of zoning history and land-use regulations to help residents and developers understand property potential and limitations. Public Engagement:
Prepare materials for community events and public meetings, gaining a front-row seat to how local government interacts with its citizens. Special Projects:
Perform independent research on emerging planning trends, providing data-driven insights that help inform city policy makers. WHAT YOU WILL GAIN - Mentorship:
Work directly alongside experienced planners and city officials.
Skills:
Portfolio Building:
Generate maps, reports, and exhibits that can be used in your professional portfolio. Conflict Resolution:
Develop "soft skills" by learning to navigate professional interactions in high-stakes public environments.
REQUIRED:
Academic Standing:
Upcoming 4th-year Undergraduate or Graduate student in City Planning, Public Administration, Geography, or a closely related field. Technical Literacy:
Proficiency in Google Workspace and fundamental knowledge of ArcGIS PRO software. Communication:
Strong writing and verbal skills, with the ability to remain professional and composed during stressful or confrontational public interactions. Compliance: A valid Utah driver's license and the ability to pass a background check and drug screen. A passion for municipal service and community development. PREFERRED:
Prior experience with data analysis, statistics, Sketchup, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, and Bluebeam.
Individual starting salary will depend on qualifications, certifications, and experience.
We understand you're a student first. While our office hours are Monday-Thursday (7:30 am - 5:30 pm) and Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), we offer a highly flexible schedule to accommodate your class times, midterms, and finals.
This is a part-time, non-benefited position with a variable schedule of 20 to 28 hours per week (maximum 56 hours per pay period).SUBMIT APPLICATION ONLINE:
