Overview
The Salt Lake County Extension Summer Garden Intern is responsible for supporting the Salt Lake County 4‑H Garden program at the Bastian Agricultural Center in South Jordan, Utah.
Program OverviewThe Salt Lake County 4‑H Junior Master Gardener program offers hands‑on and experiential lessons in all areas of garden and plant science for youth, including basic botany, planting, disease and pest maintenance, pollination and support of pollinators, beekeeping, harvesting and food preservation techniques. Our main garden at the Bastian Agricultural Center is home to 50+ different varieties of fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers.
Youth learn both traditional and regenerative growing methods. We aim to not only inspire youth to grow their own food, but also to explore potential leadership and career pathways within the plant science, food science or gardening field.
As part of USU Extension, the Summer Garden Intern will intern and network with the 4‑H Program Coordinator as well as different extension professionals within the Salt Lake County office. The intern will learn about 4‑H education programs as well as other garden‑related research‑backed resources provided by Salt Lake County Extension.

- Assist with maintenance of the 4‑H garden, including but not limited to planting, watering, weeding, pest/disease checks, irrigation monitoring and harvesting
- Attend and help teach twice monthly 4‑H Junior Master Gardener youth club meetings/lessons
- Plan occasional garden education activities for 4‑H youth
- Create garden outreach activities and plan programs for community members to recruit and strengthen the program
- Provide mentorship for 4‑H garden program youth
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Excellent skills in taking initiative as well as being a self‑starter and reliable
- Experience with gardening or small‑scale agriculture
- Past experience in 4‑H or a similar youth leadership program or experience with mentoring or working with youth
- Experience with community outreach or building community partnerships

Advertised Salary$16.00/hr
ADAMust be willing and able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and in rough terrain (dirt, gravel, etc.) for an extended period of time. Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and/or extreme cold. This position requires moderate physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds), walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting.
This position requires nearly continuous standing, repetitive hand motions, and reaching overhead.
