Overview

Arts Access at Utah State University is seeking an Artist-in-Residence to support the growth in arts inclusion programming at Union Middle School in Canyons School District, Sandy, Utah. Canyons has an arts inclusion initiative that utilizes the arts to support social engagement and social learning in and through the arts.

The Artist-in-Residence will work directly at Union Middle School in cooperation with the visual art teacher for 20 hours per week from mid-August to mid-October (10 weeks) as part of the arts classroom and PLCs. After first quarter, the Artist-in-Residence will continue to participate remotely in the Sped/Art PLC twice a month (2 hours/mo) as a continuing part of the team, primarily as a consultant, through the duration of the 2026 – 2027 school year.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within the state of Utah.

The Artist-in-Residence will work in collaboration with the visual art teacher at Union Middle School to support the existing arts inclusion programming that partners peer tutors with special education students during their inclusion art class. The Artist-in-Residence would work directly with the visual art teacher in the arts classroom to implement collaborative planned lessons, supporting social learning opportunities. The Artist-in-Residence will be a part of the special education unit’s class time in the art room.

The artist will work directly with the visual arts teacher and peer partners to support engagements in collaboratively planned lessons, supporting the development of independent visual art skills in the classroom environment.

The Artist-in-Residence works under the supervision of the Canyons Jordan Valley BTS Arts Inclusion Special Education Partnership coordinator, who will assist in the objectives of the PLC and facilitate opportunities for collaboration.

Responsibilities

The Artist-in-Residence will be part of a professional learning community (PLC) that will consist primarily of the visual arts teacher and special education unit teacher. They will support the sharing of expertise from the arts and special education to develop programming that improves inclusive practices. The Artist-in-Residence will offer their expertise in inclusive practices and support collaborative dialogs that serve the primary purpose of the Sped/Art PLC: to share knowledge about special education students’ ability, needs and goals, and to support the visual art teacher to better plan with special education students in mind.

The Artist-in-Residence will foster this Sped/Art partnership to support sustainable school specific resources (information, knowledge of disability, specific student needs and abilities, etc.), a place for dialog and reflection on art inclusion practices.

Qualifications
  • K – 12 teaching experience
  • Special education in the arts experience
  • Interest in working with students with disabilities
