Job Description & How to Apply Below
The Supplemental Instruction program is looking to bring on additional SI leaders who will provide guidance to students through weekly structured study sessions. SI leaders will work with faculty and other leaders throughout the semester to provide support to historically difficult classes, collaborate with faculty, and attend on-going training throughout the semester.
Position Overview
On top of leading weekly SI sessions, SI leaders are expected to complete observations of other SI leaders and provide constructive feedback for improvement. SI leaders are also expected to contribute to certain Academic Tutoring initiatives like collaborating with other leaders, attending and participating in mandatory training before and throughout the semester, and maintaining professional relationships with faculty. This position is extremely autonomous and requires a strong sense of direct and intrinsic motivation.
If hired, you would be trusted to complete this work autonomously while following program policies and procedures. This position is a semester long commitment. Please ensure that you have serious intentions to complete the semester, as SI leaders have unique roles and are not easily replaceable.
* Attend mandatory pre-semester and monthly trainings
* Consistently attend 3-4 hours of class per week
* Plan and facilitate 3-4 weekly structured study sessions
* Conduct observations of other SI leaders and provide constructive feedback
* Cultivate professional relationships with faculty, students, and other SI leaders
* Must be a current UVU student with a 3.0 GPA or better
* Knowledge of material covered in the SI course, as evidenced by having received a B or better in the course at UVU
Physical Requirements
* SI leaders hold sessions in classrooms, conference rooms, or computer labs on UVU main campus.
* Schedule determined as needed by instructors, administration, and employee.
* Frequent standing, sitting, and walking.
* Frequent use of fine hand manipulation associated with the use of a computer.
Successful SI leaders will be able to:
* Motivate themselves to learn and practice SI techniques discussed in pre-semester and on-going trainings
* Plan and lead structured SI sessions that integrate study skills with course content
* Understand and adhere to policies and procedures set forth by coordinators and outlined in the UVU SI manual
* Exercise integrity and professionalism while given the autonomy to complete work independently
* Analyze the needs of students in the assigned lecture and adjust session plans accordingly
* Speak in front of assigned lectures and actively communicate with students regarding the purpose of SI sessions
* Independently practice and adhere to program policies and procedures laid forth by program staff
* Maintain confidentiality
* Contribute to and actively practice the educational foundations of the program
