Utah Valley University invites applications for a Professional in Residence position in Accounting!

Working under the direction of the Department Chair, this position teaches accounting-related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Teaching assignments will be based on the candidate’s professional expertise, departmental needs, and program priorities. Additional responsibilities may include serving as lead faculty instructor for one or more courses.

The successful candidate will maintain AACSB professional qualification standards and actively contribute to curriculum alignment with current industry practices. This includes collaborating with faculty to ensure course content reflects real-world accounting demands and helps bridge academic theory with professional practice.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, the position supports student success through mentoring, career development guidance, and assistance with building industry connections, job search strategies, and professional readiness.

Responsibilities
  • As assigned by the Department Chair, teaches courses related to accounting. Teaching assignment will be based on professional expertise and departmental teaching needs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Maintains AACSB professional category qualifications. Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study that includes measurable objectives for each course taught. Maintains a student-oriented approach to education. Takes an active role in maintaining and updating curriculum to reflect current industry standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Assists the Department in tasks/projects commensurate with the experience and expertise of the applicant (e.g., alumni relations, placement efforts, etc.). Serves as a bridge between academic theory and professional practice. Collaborates with faculty on course design that prepares students for contemporary workplace demands.
  • Attends organization meetings and helps create high-quality student engagement that will benefit the students as well as the professional reputation of the Accounting Department, Woodbury School of Business, and Utah Valley University.
  • Advises and mentors students on career paths, skill development, and professional preparation. Helps students build industry connections and develop job search strategies.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited institution with an appropriate degree in a field of study directly related to the summary of duties, plus professional experience related to the program or discipline. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from an AACSB-accredited institution with a Master’s degree in an accounting‑related field, or significant executive‑level professional experience, is desirable.
  • A minimum of 5 years of recent professional accounting experience is required. 7-10+ years of recent professional experience, including significant management and supervisory accounting experience, is preferred.
  • Connection with Utah accounting firms and businesses is preferred.
  • Current accounting‑related certifications and licenses (CPA, CMA, CIA, CFE, CGMA, etc) are preferred.
Knowledge
  • Extensive knowledge of subject matter and course content of classes to be taught, instructional strategies, and techniques related to accounting.
  • Extensive knowledge of student management, motivation, and evaluation.
  • Extensive knowledge of the accounting profession.
  • Substantial and recent industry experience in relevant professional settings; often includes leadership or specialized roles.
  • Deep understanding of current industry practices, tools, regulatory frameworks, and emerging trends
Skills
  • Skills in controlling the classroom environment, engaging students in an organized way that invites learning the details and processes of business topics, especially accounting.
  • Skills in relating to students in a way that engages them with the material being taught.
  • Skills in projecting a love of learning and enthusiasm for the accounting profession.

  • Skills in maintaining a professional network.

  • Ability to organize and structure sequences of learning events and concepts so that students perceive, build, and accomplish class objectives.

  • Ability to coordinate, train, and supervise adjunct instructors in introductory accounting courses.
  • Ability to motivate students towards an accounting degree.
