UVU Academic Advisors serve as intentional partners who guide students through academic planning, decision-making, and navigating the university. They promote persistence and completion by delivering proactive, data-informed advising aligned with institutional priorities and policies. Advisors manage substantial caseloads while providing high-quality support, applying policies accurately, and documenting interactions within a coordinated care approach.

Summary

of Responsibilities

Student Readiness and Learning:
Engage students in advising interactions that support measurable growth in readiness, understanding, and responsibility. Provide direct academic advising through scheduled and/or drop-in appointments, maintaining strong availability and proactively managing caseloads and follow-through. Support academic readiness by helping students clarify goals, understand requirements and policies, and identify next steps toward progress and completion. Promote increasing student responsibility, self-authorship, and independent decision-making.

Tailor advising approaches to students' developmental stage and academic context using appropriate practices.

Care Coordination, Documentation, and Assessment:
Document advising interactions, manage cases, respond to alerts, and coordinate referrals using institutional systems. Collaborate with campus partners to ensure effective handoffs, timely follow-up, and continuity of care. Contribute to assessment efforts by documenting learning outcomes, readiness indicators, and student next steps.

Professional Contribution & Engagement:
Contribute to coordinated outreach efforts. Document advising interactions, respond to alerts, manage cases, and complete referrals with follow-up to ensure continuity of care. Support unit- and division-wide initiatives. Participate in meetings, trainings, and initiatives while contributing to assessment, collaboration, and continuous improvement efforts.

Documentation, Preparation, & Coordination:
Complete accurate and timely documentation of advising interactions. Conduct appropriate follow-up communication with students. Coordinate with campus partners to initiate referrals, share relevant student information, and complete follow-up to ensure timely, continuous support for student success.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree plus one year of related experience totaling five years.

Preferred Qualifications:

College-level academic advising experience is preferred.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the university's mission, values, and student success goals.
  • Knowledge of academic advising theory, student development principles, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of academic policies, curriculum structures, degree requirements, and institutional processes.
  • Knowledge of technology platforms, advising systems, and tools used to support student success.
  • Knowledge of coordinated care models in higher education and the use of institutional tools to support referrals, case management, outreach, and student success workflows.
  • Knowledge of student learning and developmental outcomes related to academic advising, including academic decision-making, goal clarification, responsibility, and practical competence, as articulated in the CAS Standards for Academic Advising Programs.

  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
