Position Announcement

Utah Valley University’s e2i program connects students with real-world industry projects while providing paid, hands‑on experience. As part of an interdisciplinary team, you will collaborate with peers and industry partners to develop solutions that meet professional standards.

The Mechanical Engineering team member will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to design and validate rugged enclosures for remote outdoor communication hardware. You will be responsible for reducing unit weight, size, and cost while maintaining extreme durability and battery life standards. This position is ideal for students studying Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Industrial Design.

Summary Of Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the design and development of a rugged enclosure package.
  • Develop complete 3D CAD files for satellite and mesh‑networked devices.
  • Assist with serviceability considerations to ensure ease of maintenance in the field.
  • Support cost analysis tasks by optimizing material choice and assembly efficiency.
  • Participate in team reviews and present design updates to the project client.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
  • Must be a current UVU student.
  • Must be available for at least 5–10 hours per week.
  • Experience with prototyping with a 3D‑printer.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., Solid Works, Fusion 360).
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and selecting material specifications for harsh environments.
  • Understanding of tooling requirements and interacting with contract manufacturers.
  • Ability to conduct user handling validation and incorporate field feedback into design revisions.
  • Knowledge of environmental testing protocols (heat, moisture, impact).
