Utah Valley University invites applications for a part‑time Speech‑to‑Text Specialist who is committed to supporting student learning and communication access. Working under the direction of the Deaf and Hard‑of‑Hearing Student Services Director, this role provides real‑time, meaning‑for‑meaning transcription of class lectures and discussions using specialized abbreviation software. Spoken content is converted into clear written English and displayed live on a student's device, with transcripts also available for later reference.
This position offers a meaningful opportunity to support academic success while maintaining confidentiality and professional standards in accordance with Utah Valley University policies and FERPA guidelines.
- Provide real‑time meaning‑for‑meaning transcriptions of lectures, discussions, and group work using Type Well software. Identify and convey essential content accurately and succinctly in clear, grammatically correct English. May be asked to voice questions/comments from deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students, depending on classroom dynamics and student preference.
- Edit and finalize transcripts when needed, depending on the accommodation plan. Provide students with an electronic version of the final, edited transcript.
- Prepare for classes by reviewing course materials and entering vocabulary into the software's glossary as needed. Work with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Student Services Director to resolve any issues around access to materials for transcribers.
- Set up and break down equipment in various campus settings; ensure laptops and peripherals are charged and functioning.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Type at least 60 words per minute with high accuracy. Some experience as a transcriber in a higher education setting.
- 3+ years of experience as a transcriber in a higher education setting.
- Familiarity with accessibility services or other disability support settings.
- Prior completion of Type Well's Service Qualification in Basic Transcribing, and any other Type Well Advanced Courses.
- Will be asked to submit a personal Type Well Educational History or training record.
- Knowledge of Type Well software and application.
- Knowledge of computer use in the workplace, including typing, maintaining an electronic work calendar in the specified program(s), utilizing internet search engines, as well as a variety of programs, including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
- Knowledge of deafness, Deaf culture, and the Deaf community.
- Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and academic vocabulary.
- Skilled in listening and concentration strategies; ability to process and rephrase spoken content quickly and accurately.
- Skilled in reading comprehension, with strong memory recall.
- Skilled in written, oral, and interpersonal communication.
- Skilled in problem‑solving, with attention to detail and follow‑through.
- Ability to type 65+ words‑per‑minute.
- Ability to maintain a professional and friendly attitude and to quickly develop rapport with a wide variety of people.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
- Ability to work independently, and as part of an educational team.
