At Utah Valley University, the Telecom Administrator – Network Infrastructure plays a vital role in sustaining the technology foundation that powers learning, research, and campus operations. Working under the direction of the Sr. Telecom Engineer, this position provides hands‑on expertise in installing, maintaining, testing, and documenting the university’s network physical layer—including copper and fiber cabling, analog telecom lines and devices, and related telecommunications equipment.

  • Physical Layer Installation, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting:
    Installs, terminates, labels, tests, and certifies copper and fiber optic cabling to support university network and telecommunications services. Installs and supports analog telecom lines, devices, and related infrastructure. Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and repairs physical layer connectivity issues to minimize service disruptions. Performs preventative maintenance and testing to ensure reliability, performance, and compliance with applicable standards. Coordinates installation activities with network engineers and IT staff to support new construction, renovations, and equipment deployments.
  • Documentation, Records, and Inventory Management:
    Maintains accurate and up‑to‑date documentation of the university’s physical network infrastructure, including cable routes, terminations, closets, and equipment locations. Coordinates and maintains records for all physical cabling installations, modifications, and removals. Maintains inventory of physical layer materials, tools, and parts to ensure availability for ongoing operations and projects. Updates records to support troubleshooting, audits, capacity planning, and long‑term infrastructure management.
  • Product Evaluation and Infrastructure Improvement:
    Researches, evaluates, and recommends physical layer cabling solutions, components, tools, and manufacturers to improve performance, reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency. Assesses existing infrastructure and identifies opportunities for upgrades, standardization, or replacement. Collaborates with the Sr Telecom Engineer and network team members to support infrastructure planning and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Customer Service and Cross‑Team Coordination:
    Provides professional customer service to faculty, staff, and departments during installations, repairs, and troubleshooting activities. Communicates clearly regarding work schedules, service impacts, and resolution timelines. Coordinates with network, telecom, and other IT team members to ensure effective service delivery and alignment with broader technology initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or technology‑related field, plus 1 year of experience; OR any combination of education and experience totaling 5 years.

Knowledge
  • Knowledge and experience working in a customer service, team‑oriented, collaborative environment.
