Position Announcement

The Accessible Technology Technician will play a crucial role in ensuring that educational materials, web content, and videos are accessible to students with disabilities. This student position involves remediating textbooks and documents for accessibility and creating accurate captions for videos used in academic settings. The assistant will collaborate with instructors, students, accessibility services, and ATC staff to enhance the learning experience for all.

This is a part-time student position that offers 20 to 24 hours of work per week.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Captioning Services:
    • Remediate Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF documents for accessibility, including textbooks, instructional materials, and web content.
    • Create high-quality captions for videos, including lectures, presentations, and instructional materials.
    • Ensure captions are accurate, synchronized, and meet accessibility standards.
    • Collaborate with instructors to understand specific content and context for effective captioning.
  • Technical Proficiency:
    • Familiarize yourself with accessibility remediation and captioning software and tools.
    • Troubleshoot any technical issues related to document accessibility and captioning.
  • Communication:
    • Maintain clear communication with instructors, students, accessibility services, and the ATC team.
    • Address any document remediation and captioning-related inquiries promptly.
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Review and edit documents and/or captions as needed to improve accuracy and readability.
    • Verify that captions align with the content and convey the intended message.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Services Coordinator (if applicable) and Alternative Text Production Coordinator to coordinate captioning efforts.
    • Attend relevant meetings or training sessions related to accessibility, document remediation, and captioning.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
  • Must be a current UVU student
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with document authoring tools and video captioning tools (training can be provided).
  • Sensitivity to the needs of individuals with disabilities.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Ability to research and problem solve
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of UVU resources
  • Knowledge of time management, organization, and self-advocacy-related resources and tools
