General PurposePerforms a variety of working level, semi-skilled duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance, upkeep and repair of the cemetery grounds and general environs
Supervision ReceivedWorks under the general supervision of the Cemetery Maintenance Worker II, Cemetery Sexton or Parks Superintendent.

Essential FunctionsOperates lawn mowing equipment; mows and trims grass, bushes and shrubs; assists in pruning activities on trees, shrubs and plants; removes dead, diseased, or injured trees; stimulates healthy plant growth through custom pruning and cutting. Performs general landscape and gardening duties; removes weeds, plants and transplants trees, shrubs, bushes, grass, flowers etc. as directed to develop an attractive cemetery and grounds.
Assists with storage building maintenance and cleaning.
Performs lawn cutting and trimming in preparation of cemetery burials; assists with marking, digging and back filling of graves; assists with maintenance of burial plots, marks headstone and monument placements; assists in the development of new cemetery sections.
Assists with funerals by directing processions, setting up and maintaining funeral parking areas and coordinating cemetery activities; assists customers in locating graves; supervises the work of head stone and vault companies.
Employee may also be tasked to the Parks department for special projects at the Cemetery Sexton or Parks Superintendent's request.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience
Graduation from a standard senior high school; one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance, upkeep, and beautification of turf, parks, facilities and related environs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of:
Turf, landscape and sprinkler system maintenance; pump systems; hazards and related safety precautions associated with hand power tool operations; of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and pesticides with some skill level in the use of general gardening tools.
Ability to:
Effectively communicate verbally with supervisors and potentially grieving customers. Must be able to lift and/or manipulate 100 lbs.
Special Qualifications
Must have a valid driver's license.
Must have the ability to obtain & maintain a non-commercial pesticide spray cert. from the State of Utah.
Upon hire, employee must pass Hazard Communication training.
Work Environment
Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Talking, hearing and seeing is essential to the performance of the job. Daily exposure to weather extremes and seasonal conditions are common. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity needed in performance of essential duties. Mental application utilizing memory for and attention to details, verbal instructions, discerning thinking.
Frequent local travel required in the normal course of job performance.
