Orientation Weeks:
June 18th
The Field Guide is the primary facilitator of daily student experiences in a rigorous backcountry environment. You will create a safe, supervised space for at‑risk teenagers, mentor them in wilderness skills, and deliver an experiential curriculum that supports their therapeutic journey.
Field Guides work 8 consecutive days in the backcountry with small teams of at‑risk teens, often living primitively and communing with nature. Two program types are offered:
- Three Peaks: Basecamp living, shared yurts, and day excursions such as mountain biking, slack lining, and snowshoeing.
- Red Cliff: Expedition style, nomadic living in a 400‑square‑mile wilderness corridor with minimal infrastructure.
- Field Guides work 8 consecutive days in the backcountry with struggling teenagers (hike daily, minimal cell service, etc.)
- Ensure the supervision and safety of students.
- Mentor students in primitive and outdoor skills.
- Assist students with their therapeutic curriculum.
- Share appreciation for nature and outdoor practices.
- Lead experiential activities and facilitate group discussions.
- Create a safe environment for emotional processing.
- De‑escalate and manage crises within the group.
- Provide support, direction, and feedback to coworkers during shifts.
- Creatively, collaboratively, and safely address backcountry challenges.
- Carry essential gear such as 1ST‑Aid kit, radio, and SPOT device.
- Follow all company policies and procedures.
- Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations.
- Maintain a positive, fun attitude while working with youth.
- High school diploma or equivalent (college degree preferred).
- 1ST‑Aid and CPR certification required within the first month;
Wilderness First Responder (WFR) preferred. - Minimum 19 years of age.
- Successful criminal background check.
- Successful pre‑employment health assessment.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
- Physical ability to work 8‑day shifts, live primitively, and carry >40 pounds daily over uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
- Effective teamwork and collaboration.
- Leadership and decision‑making aptitude.
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- Emotional self‑regulation.
- Sound judgment and safety orientation.
- Ability to give and receive feedback.
- Establish and maintain healthy boundaries.
- Schedule:
8 on / 6 off (approximately 150 days off per year). - Basecamp accommodation available before and after shifts (beds, kitchen, showers).
