Overview

Event Security at Utah Valley University plays a vital role in creating safe, welcoming, and well-run campus events. Building on the core responsibilities of Event Staff, this position adds entry screening and back-of-house security duties that directly support the safety of guests, performers, and colleagues. Event Security team members operate walk-through magnetometers and handheld screening devices, conduct bag checks in accordance with established policies, manage access to restricted areas, and enforce prohibited-item guidelines with consistency and professionalism.

This role is ideal for individuals who value sound judgment, clear communication, and calm decision-making in a fast-paced environment. Event Security staff work closely with Supervisors, back-of-house managers, and law enforcement partners, contributing to a coordinated, respectful approach to event safety. Responsibilities
  • Guest Services & Wayfinding:
    Welcome guests; provide directions, seating assistance, and ADA support; resolve routine questions and complaints with empathy and professionalism.
  • Ticketing & Access Control non-screening:
    Scan tickets/credentials; verify seating locations; prevent pass-backs; redirect or escalate suspected fraud.
  • Crowd Management:
    Monitor aisles, concourses, stairs, and portals for congestion; execute hold/release procedures; maintain clear egress; report hazards.
  • Policy Communication:
    Politely enforce venue policies bag size, re-entry rules, prohibited behaviors; escalate refusals per protocol.
  • Incident Observation & Reporting:
    Recognize concerning behavior impairment, disorderly conduct, medical needs; notify control/dispatch; complete concise incident statements as directed.
  • Emergency Readiness:
    Follow staff movement and guest communication directions during alarms, evacuations, or shelter-in-place; support ADA evacuations per plan.
  • Professional Presence:
    Maintain assigned post; uphold service standards; keep areas tidy; support opening and close-out checklists.
  • Entry Screening Operations:
    Set up/verify magnetometer calibration and lane configuration per supervisor direction. Conduct screening with professionalism and consistency; use secondary wanding as required. Execute bag checks in view of CCTV when possible; apply bag-size and contents policy; manage divest tables. Enforce prohibited-items policy; follow refusal, surrender, or denial-of-entry procedures and document as directed.
  • Queue & Throughput Management:
    Stage stanchions/signage; meter guest flow to maintain target throughput while preserving screening quality. Triage VIP/ADA/issue lines; coordinate with ticketing to resolve exceptions quickly.
  • Credential & Access Control Back of House:
    Validate credentials at docks, tunnels, stage doors, and production corridors; deny access when not authorized; log deliveries and vendor check-ins. Monitor Back of House for propped doors and unknown persons or property. report security breaches as directed.
  • Incident Response & Coordination:
    Notify control/dispatch; preserve scenes as directed; write clear factual statements who/what/when/where. Support ejections and welfare checks as directed by Supervisors; always prioritize safety and de-escalation.
  • Asset & Information Protection:
    Maintain discretion regarding talent movement and production details; challenge unknown persons politely.
  • Compliance & Professional Standards:
    Follow search/screening and privacy protocols; treat all guests with dignity and impartiality. Maintain chain-of-custody procedures for surrendered items as instructed.

High School diploma or GED

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Two Way Radios.
  • Experience with events and crowd management.
Knowledge
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with people from varied backgrounds within a university setting.
  • Knowledge of suspicious activity and behaviors.
  • Knowledge of where to find help with ticketing issues, an unruly guest, a medical emergency etc.
Skills
  • Skills in effectively dealing with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, tact, friendliness, poise and firmness.
  • Fantastic communication and social skills, including the ability to listen and deescalate tense situations.
Abilities
  • Ability to read small print.
